Pirates add concerts to thick list of promotions
Fans' response leads to some adjustments
Thursday, January 25, 2007

The Pirates' 2007 promotional schedule, released yesterday, will include five bobblehead giveaways, six fireworks nights, three SkyBlast shows and the introduction of postgame concerts.

Tim Schuldt, chief marketing and sales officer, described the schedule as more far-reaching than previous ones and a response to fan feedback.

"We're in the business of keeping our customers happy," Schuldt said. "Part of that is baseball, part is entertainment, and part is excellent customer service. This schedule is a natural evolution of everything we've learned from our customers."

The bobbleheads will include a Jason Bay All-Star model April 13 and a Freddy Sanchez National League batting champion model April 28. In addition, there will be bobbleheads for catcher Ronny Paulino May 12, new first baseman Adam LaRoche June 2 and broadcaster Bob Walk June 30.

There also will be a figurine commemorating Roberto Clemente's 3,000th hit Sept. 8, as well as a replica of PNC Park's Josh Gibson statue Aug. 3.

The number of fireworks and SkyBlasts -- Aug. 16-18 -- remains the same, but the concerts will be new. The first will come after the July 4 game and feature Big & Rich. Styx, Smash Mouth and PovertyNeck Hillbillies will perform, in that order, as part of each SkyBlast show. And a not-yet-named local act will perform Sept. 29.

Schuldt said the Pirates' decision to add concerts was inspired by having 30 or so live jazz and blues performances after games inside PNC Park's exclusive Montecristo Club.

"The fans there loved it, and the bands would play as long as two hours after the game," he said. "Seeing that, why not do it a few times a year for the whole stadium?"

In addition to the annual African American Heritage Celebration weekend, the Pirates are adding seven nationality days: Greek is May 20, Latino June 3, Italian July 1, Irish July 8, Polish July 22, Slovak Aug. 19 and German Sept. 9.

The team also announced it will unveil its new alternate uniforms -- red is being reintroduced to the color scheme -- and new spring training uniforms at 4:30 p.m. Friday as part of PirateFest, which opens a half-hour earlier. The opening hour of PirateFest is for season-ticket holders only.
