Catholic Schools week to celebrate The Good News in Education

The Good News in Education, referring to the hard work, dedication and sacrifice of students, teachers, parents and parishioners, is the theme of Catholic Schools Week, which will be celebrated Sunday through Feb. 3.

There are a number of activities planned during the week, such as athletic contests, ice cream socials and visits by special guests.

These are some of the scheduled activities for Catholic schools in South:

BALDWIN BOROUGH

Bishop John B. McDowell

Monday: Michael Spisak, a Baldwin school parent who is a juggler, will perform for assemblies at 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Thursday: Science Night will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m., with classroom activities that will be challenging for students and their families.

BETHEL PARK

St. Germaine

Tuesday: There will be a sock hop from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room for grades K-4. There will be a class on Internet safety for parents at 7 p.m. in the multipurpose room; the instructor is FBI agent Denise Holtz.

Wednesday: Parishioners will be taught computer basics in classrooms from 1:55 to 2:55 p.m.

Feb. 2: There will be a family bingo held from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Bethel Park Community Center.

St. Thomas More

Saturday: There will be a school open house and book fair after the 5 p.m. Mass at the church. The book fair runs all week during Catholic Schools Week.

St. Valentine

Monday: The Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium will offer a demonstration featuring live animals in the afternoon at Frawley Hall.

BRENTWOOD

St. Sylvester

Monday: A contest featuring classroom doors decorated by pupils will start and will continue throughout the week. Pupils bringing in goods for food pantries will be able to vote. Also, there will be an "American Idol"-style singing competition starting at 12:30 p.m. for grades K-4.

Tuesday: The singing competition for grades 5-8 will start at 12:30 p.m.

CASTLE SHANNON

St. Anne

Thursday: Winter carnival for grades K-3.

Feb. 2: Game show for grades 4-8.

ELIZABETH BOROUGH

St. Michael

Wednesday: Teddy bear picnic for kindergarten.

Feb. 2: Pajama/pizza day for grades 5 and 6.

GREEN TREE

St. Margaret of Scotland

Thursday: Hat Day and a student ticket auction.

McKEESPORT

Serra Catholic

Monday: Sports jersey dress down day.

Tuesday: Ice cream social in the afternoon.

Thursday: Spelling bee at 1:45 p.m.

MT. LEBANON

Seton-La Salle

Wednesday: The student variety show will be presented to parents in the evening.

Thursday: The same show will be presented to the student body in the afternoon.

MUNHALL

St. Therese of Lisieux

Tuesday: Clash Day, with pupils wearing wild and zany outfits.

Wednesday: Career Day with parents making presentations about their careers.

PLEASANT HILLS

St. Elizabeth

Monday: A science fair featuring projects made by sixth- through eighth-grade pupils. Also, a free a la carte ticket from the cafeteria for every pupil.

PORT VUE

St. Joseph Regional

Thursday: Pep rally and ice cream social in the afternoon.

SCOTT

Our Lady of Grace

Saturday: After the 6 p.m. Mass, featuring singing by the student choir, there will be a dedication of the library to former Principal Gloria Jozwiak.

Monday: County Chief Executive Dan Onorato will address an assembly on how a Catholic education has affected him.

SOUTH PARK

St. Joan of Arc

Tuesday: Donuts with Dad, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Brown Bag Lunch with a Special Person at 11:30 a.m. and 12:20 p.m.

Wednesday: Parents will serve teachers lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Nativity

Feb. 2: A volleyball game between students and faculty starts at 1:15 p.m. and is followed by an ice cream social at 2:30 p.m.

UPPER ST. CLAIR

St. Louise de Marillac

Monday: Pupils will build their own airplanes and spacecraft to be raced in an all-school aviation competition in the school's gymnasium.

Tuesday: Pupils will serve a continental breakfast to their bus drivers at 8 a.m.

WEST MIFFLIN

St. Agnes

Monday: Pupils will participate in an interactive UPMC presentation on health and wellness that afternoon.

Thursday: Hats Off to Mallory. Pupils will make and decorate hats in tribute to Mallory Oross, of West Mifflin, who died at age 6 on Dec. 22 from a rare cancer. She had lost her hair during treatments but enjoyed wearing hats. Contributions made will start a Mallory Oross scholarship fund.

Feb. 2: During the 9 a.m. Mass, Christina Pohula, an organist for school programs, will be presented with the Distinguished Graduate Award.

WHITE OAK

St. Angela Merici

Monday: It is the 100th day of school, with pupils collecting 100 cans of food for the White Oak Safe Haven no-kill animal shelter and 100 hygiene items for St. Ann nursing home.

WHITEHALL

St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin

Monday: Tony Palatucci will use a chain saw to demonstrate his ice-carving skills for an afternoon assembly.

Thursday: Actor Tim Hartman, from the Civic Light Opera, will entertain pupils in a morning assembly.
