Three area football players have been recognized by Don Hansen's Football Gazette on its All-Northeast Region team, which was announced last week.

Woodland Hills High School graduate Chris Morgan, a 6-foot, 210-pound senior running back at Indiana University of Pennsylvania was a first-team selection.

Pitt track standouts

Three area athletes currently attending the University of Pittsburgh -- Mycaiah Clemons, Suzy Bossart and Nikki Bielick -- turned in fine performances at the Penn State Track & Field Open last weekend.

Clemons, a sophomore who graduated from Valley, finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.80 seconds.

Bossart, a senior, and Bielick, a junior, are Greensburg Salem graduates who ran personal-best times in the 3,000-meter run.

Bossart finished fifth with a time of 10:24.48, while Bielick finished ninth with a time of 10:43.70.

Heroics at Pitt-Johnstown

Aliqiuppa graduate Dwight Hines hit a jumper with eight seconds left to lift Pitt-Johnstown (12-6) to a 71-70 win at the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday.

Pitt-Johnstown was trailing, 70-69, with 26 seconds to play when J.J. Schumacher (Bethel Park) stole a pass, giving the Mountain Cats a chance for the last shot. Hines connected on a jump shot to provide the winning points, and finished the game with nine points.

He needs 18 points to reach 1,000 for his collegiate career.

Hines, a 6-foot-1 senior guard, is averaging 13.0 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

He is shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 34.7 percent from 3-point range. His best game was against West Liberty State on Dec. 29, when he scored 31 points.

North Catholic graduate Katie Lewandowski was named Presidents' Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the first week of the month.

Lewandowski, a 5-4 senior guard at Waynesburg College, joined the 1,000-point club for her career on Jan. 6 in a 61-58 victory over Thiel.

She is averaging 12.9 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game. She is shooting 80.6 percent from the foul line.
