Olympic gold medalists Gail Devers and Maurice Greene will compete at the 100th Millrose Games. Devers, 40, is entered in the 60-meter hurdles and Greene in the 60-meter dash Feb. 2 at Madison Square Garden.
Baseball
The Oakland Athletics traded pitcher Kirk Saarloos to the Cincinnati Reds for a minor-league reliever. Saarloos was 7-7 with two saves and a 4.75 ERA last season for the A's.
Los Angeles Angels infielder Dallas McPherson had surgery to remove a herniated disc in his lower back and is expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2007 season.
Wild Things
Washington signed third baseman Robbie Knapp and outfielder Matt Sutton for the upcoming Frontier League season. Knapp played for the Kansas City T-Bones of the Northern League in 2006. Sutton had 12 home runs and 38 RBIs playing for Coastal Carolina University last spring.
Auto racing
After fellow NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick called Teresa Earnhardt a "deadbeat owner," Dale Earnhardt Jr. was put in the uncomfortable position of sticking up for the stepmother he has been at odds with for much of the offseason. Said Harvick: "It's hard when you have what I call a deadbeat owner that doesn't come to the racetrack. You always see Richard Childress. You always see Chip Ganassi. ... It's not just a money pit that somebody says, 'Well, I can make money off of Dale Jr. I can make money off of Dale Earnhardt.' "
NASCAR continued to tinker with its races by revamping the format of the annual Nextel All-Star Challenge. It will be run in four 20-lap segments this May.
Soccer
Manchester City terminated Claudio Reyna's contract, leaving the former U.S. captain free to sign with Major League Soccer. Reyna is likely to sign with the New York Red Bulls.
Horse racing
Invasor was the big winner at this year's Eclipse Awards late Monday night in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was named horse of the year after winning four of his five starts in 2006, including a win over Bernardini and Lava Man in the Breeders' Cup Classic.
NCAA
An NCAA committee meeting in Columbia, S.C., will not expand its ban on postseason championships in South Carolina and Mississippi, where the Confederate flag is displayed on statehouse grounds. It had considered expanding the ban to sites that are awarded on merit, such as baseball tournament regionals or football playoff games -- a move requested by the Black Coaches Association -- before deciding against it.
