New Steelers coach Mike Tomlin plans to keep Dick LeBeau as his defensive coordinator, which likely means the defense will not change a lot in 2007.

Tomlin, appearing at a press conference where he was introduced to Pittsburgh reporters today, confirmed he was keeping LeBeau, praised his reputation and said he was looking forward to working with him.

Sources told the Post-Gazette that some other coaches from Bill Cowher's staff also could stay on, although Tomlin said he was not ready to address that.

Even before Tomlin's arrival today, some players were told that LeBeau, the impresario of the zone-blitz 3-4 defense, would remain.

"I heard LeBeau's staying," linebacker Larry Foote said. "I don't think our defense will have any problems."

Tomlin has coached a 4-3 defense using a cover 2 scheme his entire NFL coaching career.

Tomlin said he got a call from team President Art Rooney last evening informing him he was the Steelers choice and celebrated with his family. He appeared at the press conference with his wife, Kiya.

He praised the talent on the Steelers roster and again pledged to emphasize the running game.
