Tuesday, January 16, 2007

The chairman and CEO of Tyco International Ltd. and his wife, both Grove City College alumni, have donated $5.5 million to the school that in turn will name its student union in their honor, officials announced today.

Ed and Lynn Branstner Breen, who graduated in 1978, met on the campus of 2,500 students. Their donation marks the end of the school's Change & Commitment Campaign, which raised $68 million, $8 million beyond its original goal, officials said.

It is the first major public campaign in Grove City's 130-year history.

"Not only does this gift have an immediate impact on our students, this type of generosity is transforming and it will inspire others to partner with us," Collge President Richard G. Jewell said.

Mr. Breen became CEO of the electronics, fire and security, healthcare and engineered products and services firm after it was hit by a financial scandal four years ago. Previously, Mr. Breen was an executive at Motorola.

While at Grove City, Mr. Breen was a business/economics major, a wrestler and a member of the Beta Sigma fraternity, the college said. Lynn Breen, also an economics major, was in the Chapel Choir and was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority.

The Breens, who live in New Hope, Pa., have three children. Mr. Breen has been a member of Grove City's board of trustees for five years.
