The eyes of the college basketball world were focused last month on Lincoln University, a small Division III institution about 45 miles southwest of Philadelphia.
Lincoln became famous, or infamous depending on the point of view, when the Orange and Blue Lions set a number of Division III and all-division records with a 201-78 victory against Ohio State-Marion in the second round of the Salem International Tournament in Salem, W.Va.
The 201 points are the most in a Division III men's game and second most in an NCAA game and Sami Wylie's 21 3-pointers set a record for all divisions. Wylie, a 5-foot-11 senior guard, made 21 of 41 attempts from beyond the arc and scored a school-record 69 points while playing just 24 minutes. He also had six assists and four steals for the Lions, who scored 97 points in the first half.
There were critics who took coach Garfield Yuille to task for running up the score.
Lincoln (11-4) will play Point Park (18-0), 4 p.m. today, at Community College of Allegheny County-South in a game that promises to produce a lot of points. Lincoln averages 97.1 points per game, while Point Park, an NAIA Division II school, is scoring 96.5 points per game.
"We'll run," Point Park coach Bob Rager said. "That's the only way we know how to play the game."
Point Park's offense is keyed by Chivas Whipple, a 6-1 junior who averages 22 points per game, and 6-3 senior Gavin Prosser, who averages 6.35 assists per game.
Lincoln, coming off an 84-70 victory against Baptist Bible College for its fourth consecutive win, is led by Wylie's 18.5 average. He has made 57 of 160 3-pointers.
Lincoln's 201 points surpassed the previous high in Division III set by Redlands in a 172-107 victory against La Sierra on Jan. 6, 2005.
The most points scored by a team in an NCAA Division II game is held by Troy in a 258-141 victory against DeVry on Jan. 12, 1992.
The Division I record was set by Loyola-Marymount in a 186-140 victory against U.S. International on Jan. 5, 1991.
