District Basketball Roundup: Clarion women upset California

Clarion (5-8) pulled a major upset in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference when it opened West Division play with a 69-58 women's basketball win against visiting California (9-4) last night.

Cal entered the game riding a 23-game PSAC West win streak.

Clarion was led by Katrina Greer (18 points) and April Gratton 17. Kim Nowakowski had a game-high 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Cal. It was her 10th double-double of the season. A senior, Nowakowski has 1,024 career points.

Other women's highlights

Westminster improved to 9-4 with a 67-51 win at Saint Vincent. Emilee Ackerman led the Titans with 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. The Bearcats' Laura Klimchock led all scorers with 26 points. ... Coach Gerri Seidl got her 250th career win when visiting Carnegie Mellon (6-7) gained a 77-49 win against Chatham (2-12). Leah Feola led CMU with a game-high 14 points.

Men's highlights

Brandon Studer scored a game-high 28 points, helping host Washington & Jefferson (4-10, 1-1) gain a 77-64 Presidents' Athletic Conference win against Waynesburg (6-4, 1-2). Jon Koch added 20 points for W&J and moved into second place on the school's career scoring list with 1,525 points. The Presidents shot 54 percent (33 for 61) from the field. ... Kyle Goldcamp had a game-high 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds, leading Pitt-Johnstown (9-5) to an 89-61 win against visiting IUP (2-8). ... Daren Tielsch's double-double (16 points, 14 rebounds) helped host Edinboro (9-4) gain a 76-51 opening PSAC West win against Shippensburg (8-10). It was Tielsch's eighth double-double of the season. ... California (10-3) won its PSAC West opener, edging host Clarion, 66-63. Kelvin Green made 8 of 9 field-goal attempts and had a game-high 19 points for the Vulcans. Leon Kennedy led Clarion (5-7) with 17 points. ... Mt. Lebanon's Bill Babe had six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 26 points, but host Allegheny (6-7) dropped a 97-87 decision to The College of Wooster (12-2, 5-0) in North Coast Athletic Conference play. ... Westminster improved to 9-5 with a 93-89 win at Saint Vincent (7-5). The Titans' Craig Hannon had a game-high 29 points.
