Aaron Stein, aviary trainer and education specialist, says the goal of the Penguin Connection program is to "inspire a respect for penguins through a really personal and close encounter."

Guests receive the chance to meet one of four African Penguins named Stanley, Patrick, Simon or Elvis in a small group setting. The foot-and-a-half tall birds scamper about, play with penguin toys and allow visitors to pet their dense feathers. The human guests also prepare a snack for the penguins.

Penguin Connection is open daily from 3-4 p.m. at The National Aviary, which is adjacent to West Park on the North Side. Visitors may sign up through the Education Program Scheduler at (412) 323-7235. There is an admission charge for Penguin Connection.
