Fishing Notebook: Management changes set for lakes, streams
Sunday, December 31, 2006

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is planning management changes for several lakes and streams across the state.

Delayed Harvest Artificial Lures Only regulations will take effect tomorrow on sections of Sandy Lick Creek in Clearfield County, Pine Creek in Lycoming County, McMichaels Creek in Monroe County and Pine Creek in Tioga County, while Tamarack Lake in Crawford County will become a Big Bass Program water.

The Fish Commission plans to seek approval at its January board meeting to add sections of Kettle Creek and Sandy Run in Blair County and part of Glen Brook in Columbia County to its list of Class A Wild Trout waters.

Muskie survey to end

Anglers have until Friday to take part in the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission's on-line muskie survey. So far, 350 individuals have taken the survey, said agency spokesman Dan Tredinnick.

He said the results will be used by fisheries managers to make decisions about future stockings on specific waters. Survey takers are allowed to see the bottom line results of the survey so far. To take part, visit www.fish.state.pa.us

Boating-related deaths double

An Ohio man might have avoided drowning on a private lake in Somerset County last month if he had been wearing a life jacket, according to the Fish and Boat Commission, which still is awaiting results of a routine toxicology report.

Martin A. Malise, Jr., 51, of Chardon, Ohio, drowned when the canoe he was fishing from capsized on Clairton Lake. His companion, Matt Gardner, 31, of Monroeville, was able to swim to shore.

Malise's death is the 25th boating related fatality in Pennsylvania this year, which is more than double the annual average. The Fish Commission, at its January board meeting, is expected to take up a proposal that would make life jackets mandatory for boaters in small vessels, such as kayaks and canoes, if only during cold weather months, although it has received hundreds of comments against the idea.

No parking

Boaters can use the 13th Street launch ramp at the Sharpsburg access area, but the parking lot is off-limits pending the installation of lights. Sam Stellitano of Memories Tackle Shop in Sharpsburg hasbeen spearheading reconstruction of the access area with his brother Larry, a Sharpsburg Borough councilman.
