There were 131 field goals attempted, 51 free throws unleashed and a player who scored 18 points was the third-leading scorer. Even the player who had 37 points couldn't lay claim to being the leading scorer.

It was a wild one as Beaver Falls (5-7) and Blackhawk (6-6) got together for the third time this season and, in the end, Beaver Falls pulled out an 84-80 victory in the third-place game at the Blackhawk tournament last night.

Forward Antoine Childs, on 15-of-32 shooting, led all scorers as he poured in 48 points for the Cougars in defeat. He also grabbed 19 rebounds and went 18 for 22 from the free-throw line.

David Phillips was hot for the Tigers, going 13 for 16 from the floor and finishing with 37 points. Todd Thomas added 18 for Beaver Falls.

Other top games

Hempfield (7-4) hit two buzzer-beaters -- one at the end of regulation and another at the end of overtime -- to grab an 80-79 win against Greensburg Salem (9-1), the Post-Gazette's No. 2-ranked WPIAL Class AAA team. Hempfield's Nate Perry scored 27 points and hit the winner at the overtime buzzer, and teammate Jon Shodi, who scored 24, hit a shot at the buzzer to send it into overtime. Aaron Allen led tournament host Greensburg Salem with 23 points.

Carlisle handed Class AAAA No. 1 Bethel Park (11-1) its first loss of the season, 70-64, in overtime in the championship game of the Blackhawk tournament. Andy Vukela had 27 points for the Black Hawks.

Class AAAA No. 2 Central Catholic (9-3) got 20 points from Joe Berenato and 16 from Chris Saltzman to earn a 54-44 win against St. Pius X of Georgia in the consolation game of the St. Pius X Classic in Atlanta.

Jeannette and Terrelle Pryor bounced back from a loss Thursday night as he put together a 23-point performance to help Class AA No. 2 Jeannette (3-3) to a 60-50 victory against Mount Pleasant (6-5) in the Greensburg Salem tournament. Davonte Shannon scored 21 points and Jerry Harris added 14 for the Jayhawks.

Bishop Canevin (7-3) showed terrific balance in its 66-63 win against Leechburg (4-5) in the consolation game of the Freeport tournament. Five Canevin players -- Kevin Nee, Zach Gallagher, Dan Gustine, Nick Mulholland and Steve Mackin -- scored between 10 and 13 points. Leechburg got 31 points from Nick Matviko.

Bravo, Franco!

Greensburg Central Catholic's Franco Sebastiani became the school's all-time leading scorer in a 66-59 win against Connellsville (3-7) in the Greensburg Salem tournament. Sebastiani, a senior guard, scored 30 points in the win for the Centurions (8-4). He has 1,437 career points and surpassed the record set in the early 1980s by Don Constantine, who scored 1,424.

Brotherly love (times two)

It was a brother act when California (9-2) slipped past Chartiers-Houston (6-6) in overtime, 63-60, at the Mason-Dixon Challenge at West Greene. Chris McVicker, a senior, led California with 20 points and his twin brother, John, had 10. Chartiers-Houston also was helped by the play of a set of brothers as senior Jordan Cypher scored 20 points and his brother, Jerad, a junior, had 12.
