Duquesne coach Ron Everhart listened to the Dukes' 98-93 overtime victory at Boston College last night on the radio and watched it on the Internet while sitting in an area near the lobby at UPMC Passavant Hospital, where he has gone through tests and treatment for abdominal problems since he was admitted Monday afternoon.
"We had to move from my room to get better reception," said Everhart, who received a visit yesterday from Pitt coach Jamie Dixon. "It's much tougher to listen to my team than it is to coach my team. You had to wait for a delay on the Internet to see what happened after I already heard what had happened."
Everhart, who hopes to be released from the hospital today if the tests go well this morning, called his players and assistant coaches at their hotel room after the game.
"I heard them yelling over the phone, 'This is for you coach,' " he said. "That made me feel really good, really proud. To win a game like this, against a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference, on the road, shows you we have a team that is very capable, very dangerous."
In Everhart's absence, Duquesne was coached by assistants Kim Lewis, Richard Pitino and Daryn Freedman.
"I had tremendous confidence in them and I couldn't be more proud of the coaches and the players," Everhart said. "I talked to them before the game and told them we have an opportunity to make the college basketball world look at us like we're important."
The Dukes rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final 4 1/2 minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime.
"My blood pressure's fine," he said with a chuckle. "I was excited, but I thought the coaches were brilliant with the substitution pattern, particularly after we got into early foul trouble, and the players showed a lot of intestinal fortitude and courage."
