District roundup: Southeastern La. beats Penn State at buzzer, 69-66

Daryl Cohen scored 28 points, including a jumper from just outside the arc as time expired, to lead visiting Southeastern Louisiana to a 69-66 victory against Penn State yesterday in the first meeting between the schools.

Terry Bryant finished with 16 points and Joseph Polite added 14 for Southeastern Louisiana (7-4). Cohen, who averages 18 points, scored 21 in the first half on 8-for-11 shooting, including 5 for 7 from 3-point range.

Jamelle Cornley led Penn State (7-4) with 18 points and Geary Claxton added 13.

The score was 66-66 with six-tenths of a second left when an inbounds pass by Penn State's David Jackson sailed out of bounds. On the ensuing play, Cohen took the inbounds pass, turned and shot, stunning the crowd of 7,922 at the Bryce Jordan Center. Southeastern Louisiana had tied the score moments earlier on two free throws by Bryant.

Other men's highlights

Joe Alexander scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the first half and host West Virginia (8-1) hit 12 3-pointers in a 76-41 win against Savannah State (5-9). Frank Young added 15 points and Alex Ruoff scored 11 for West Virginia. Savannah State lost its ninth consecutive game after opening the season with five wins. West Virginia advanced to 18-0 in December home games under fifth-year coach John Beilein. ... Hiram missed two free throws with four seconds remaining as Thiel (3-5) held on for a 63-62 win in its first home game of the season. Cory Chafee led Thiel with 16 points. ... Kevin Scott scored 28 points, Blake Anderson had 22 and Ryan Ziacik 20 as Butler County Community College (5-4) had 11 3-pointers to defeat host Jefferson CC, 90-84. ... Geneva (7-5) made 70 percent of its shots in the second half to cruise past visiting Penn State Beaver (4-7), 80-68. Greg McDivitt scored 25 points on 12-of-13 shooting to lead the Golden Tornadoes.

Women's highlights

Katie Glaws tied a career-high with 20 points as the newly christened Crimson Hawks of IUP (5-3) defeated visiting Walsh (2-8), 78-70. ... Lauren Roscoe scored 19 points, but host Carlow (2-9) was defeated by Mt. Vernon Nazerene (5-7), 88-73.
