Josh Gumbert

SCHOOL: Blackhawk.

WHO IS HE? A 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior and talented all-around athlete. He is a guard on the basketball team, a receiver-defensive back on the football team and a member of the track and field team.

THE PAST WEEK: Gumbert had 19 points Friday in a 74-65 victory against Beaver Falls and 29 in a 61-55 victory against New Castle Saturday. He had 12 Tuesday as Blackhawk (3-3) lost to Aliquippa, 66-50.

LETTERMAN SHOW: Gumbert will finish with 11 varsity letters -- four in basketball, four in track and field and three in football. He started some games in basketball as a freshman and has been a full-time starter since his sophomore year. He was a football starter since his sophomore year, and this year was one of the main reasons Blackhawk made it to the WPIAL Class AAA title game. He led the team in receptions and was a standout defensive back.

"I like football the best," Gumbert said. "When I was younger, I used to like basketball better. But, whenever I got to the varsity level, I liked football better, probably because of the contact. I like hitting people."

PIANO MAN: Gumbert has been a key to Blackhawk athletics, and he also has acquired a taste liking for pressing keys. He is an avid piano player. "I kind of just taught myself," Gumbert said.

FUTURE: Gumbert has not decided on a college yet, but small colleges are showing interest in him for football.

WHO IS SHE? A 5-foot-7 junior guard and one of the leading scorers in WPIAL girls' basketball.

ABOUT THE RECORD: "I don't think I could ever do that again," Sanderson said of her 41 points. "I had no idea I had that many." Sanderson had five 3-pointers and was 14 of 15 from the free-throw line.

CAREER: Sanderson has been on the varsity since her freshman year and was an all-section pick as a sophomore when she averaged 14 points a game.

HORSIN' AROUND: Sanderson's family used to have four horses, and she used to compete in equestrian events. "I haven't done it for a couple of years, but it was so much fun," Sanderson said. "I got thrown off a horse once and got hurt a little bit. It was just a small concussion."

HIGH MARKS: Sanderson also is an outstanding student with a 4.0 grade-point average.
