Colonials shoot just nine free throws to the Seahawks' 22

Mark Porter scored 19 of his career-high 26 points in the second half to lead Wagner to a 72-60 victory against Robert Morris yesterday at Staten Island, N.Y.

Porter added eight rebounds and five assists for the Seahawks (3-6, 1-0 Northeast Conference). Joey Mundweiler had 16 points for Wagner.

The big difference in the game was at the free-throw line. Robert Morris made 6 of 9 free throws, while Wagner was 14 of 22. The Colonials shot 34.8 percent (23 of 66) from the field.

Tony Lee had 17 points for the Colonials (5-3, 0-2), who have lost three consecutive games, while A.J. Jackson and Derek Coleman each added 13. Jackson led all rebounders with 11.

Lee had seven points as Robert Morris opened the game on an 11-2 run, but Wagner scored the next 15 points to take the lead for good. Mundweiler had eight points, including two 3-pointers, in the spurt.

The Colonials closed to within 38-33 on a jumper by Lee with 15:20 remaining, but Mundweiler had seven points in a 14-5 run that gave the Seahawks a 52-38 lead.

Other men's highlights

Freshman point guard Eugene Harvey scored a career-high 27 points and Paul Gause made a trio of 3-pointers late in the contest as Seton Hall overcame a woeful shooting performance and rallied to beat visiting Penn State, 69-59. The Pirates (6-1) outscored Penn State (6-3), 36-14, in the final 12 minutes, including 21-6 in the final seven minutes when they rallied from a 12-point deficit. Geary Claxton scored a career-high 29 points and added 11 rebounds for Penn State, which is now 5-28 on the road since Ed DeChellis took over as coach in 2004. ... Point Park ran its record to 14-0 with an 87-73 victory at St. Francis, Ill. (4-5). Chivas Whipple led the Pioneers with 38 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals. He connected on 13 of 21 shots and was 12 for 12 at the free-throw line. Gavin Prosser added 14 points and six rebounds. ... Waynesburg (4-2, 1-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference) rallied from a five-point deficit in the final minute to send the game into overtime, then outscored Grove City (2-4, 0-1), 12-9, in the extra session for an 89-82 win at Grove City. Beau Wilson led Waynesburg with 22 points. ... Westminster (3-4, 1-0) made 14 of 44 3-point attempts and defeated Washington & Jefferson (1-8, 0-1) in PAC action. Dom Joseph led Westminster with 26 points. Chauncey Whitlow added 16 for the Titans. Wahab Owolabi had 14 points and 14 rebounds for W&J. ... Saint Vincent (6-2) outscored Thomas More, 37-30, in the second half to gain a 67-61 win at Kennedy Hall in Latrobe. Jonny Hasson had 18 points for the Bearcats. ... Damon Gross scored 29 points and Robert Wright added 14 as Community College of Beaver County (7-4, 1-0 Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference) downed Butler County Community College at home, 93-80. Cory Doty had 22 points for BCCC (3-4, 0-1).

Women's highlights

Undefeated Pitt won its 10th consecutive game with a 77-69 victory at Ohio (5-2). Marcedes Walker led the Panthers, who are ranked 24th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, with 30 points and 14 rebounds. The 30 points tied her career high. Shavonte Zellous chipped in with 21 points and Xenia Stewart added 11. Pitt made 51.6 percent (32 of 62) of its shots. ... Robert Morris (4-3, 1-0) held a 43-15 lead at the half and cruised to a 78-47 victory at Wagner (1-6, 0-2) in the Colonials' NEC opener. Jenna Burkett scored 15 points for the Colonials, who connected on 44.4 percent (32 of 72) of their shots. ... Nicole Thompson made a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Bethany (4-5, 1-0 PAC) a 76-75 victory against visiting Thiel (4-5, 0-1). Amber Bodrick scored 38 points, had 16 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks for Thiel. ... Shannon Overdorff had 17 points and Elyse Bogusz 15 as Grove City (2-6, 1-0) won its PAC opener at home, 57-44, against Waynesburg (3-5, 0-1). Michaelene Jones had 12 points for Waynesburg. ...
