South Park High School graduate Jason Vrable, a senior at Marietta College, closed out his collegiate football career by moving into sixth place on the Ohio Athletic Conference's single-season passing attempts list (375) and ninth on its single-season passing yards list (2,845) and fifth in the conference record book in total offense (3123).
Vrable, the single-season and career record-holder in every Pioneers passing category, finished the year by completing 12 of 33 passes and throwing for 173 yards and a touchdown against No. 1 Mount Union.
For the season, Vrable went 202-of-375 (.539) and threw for 2,845 yards with 20 touchdowns. In his career, he completed 495-of-902 passes for 6,102 yards and 41 touchdowns. He also ran for 10 touchdowns.
Marietta's offensive captain, he leads the Ohio Athletic Conference in passing yards (fourth in the nation) and total offense. Vrable was a second-team All-OAC selection at quarterback.
Off the field, he maintains a solid grade point average as a sports medicine major. Vrable, a 2006 Academic All-OAC first team and 2005 Academic All-OAC honorable mention award winner, is also an active member of the Marietta College Student Athletic Trainers Organization.
Allegheny College standouts
Peters Township graduate Katie Murphy and Mt. Lebanon grad Robin Bunch, both players at Allegheny College, were named to the North Coast Athletic Conference women's soccer all-star team.
Murphy was a second-team selection for Allegheny College, while Bunch was an honorable mention selection for the Gators.
Murphy, a sophomore, scored six goals and dished out four assists. Bunch, a senior, turned in a stellar defensive effort. Both were honorable mention selections last year.
CMU soccer accolades
Thomas Jefferson graduate Jonathan Browne was named to the first team of the University Athletic Association men's soccer all-star team for the third consecutive year.
Browne, a senior at Carnegie Mellon, led the team with 13 goals, six coming in postseason ECAC action. Browne was also named to the honorable mention team while earning UAA rookie of the year honors in 2003.
Browne's brother, Ryan, was an honorable mention selection, along with Peters Township graduate Jonathan Hall. Ryan Browne, a freshman midfielder, started his career with four goals and four assists, including two game winners. Hall, a defender, helped limit opposing teams to 11 goals for the season.
Lebo grad excels
Mt. Lebanon graduate Eric Sloan was named to the first team of the North Coast Athletic Conference men's soccer all-star team.
Sloan, a junior at Allegheny College, was honored for the third straight year, after earning second-team honors each of the past two seasons. He was instrumental on both sides of the field, starting all 19 games and helping the Gators post a 0.80 goals-against average as well as chipping in offensively with three goals and one assist.
Sloan, who was the 2004 NCAC newcomer of the year, helped boost Allegheny into the postseason with a game-winning goal in the 104th minute against Wittenberg in the final game of the regular season. A junior, he has five goals and five assists for his career.
Meanwhile, teammate Daniel Carik, a Chartiers Valley grad, was an NCAC honorable mention selection. A 6-foot-5 senior, he helped the Gators backfield finish as one of the top units in the conference. The Gators allowed two or more goals only three times in 19 contests this season, recording eight shutouts in the process.
Carik was a major factor on corner kicks and picked up a career-high three goals, all via headers. He started all 19 games this season and finished his career with six goals and three assists.
