This is a book that reminds us that, with apologies to the "Spider-Man" franchise, with great power comes great responsibility. The people of the Uplands have abilities that most would call "gifts," but how they wield their abilities can have dangerous consequences. Gry, who can communicate with animals, and Orrec, who has the destructive power of "unmaking," face a rocky road to self-discovery and decisions about how best to use the gifts they were born with.
