Suspect surrenders in hit-run
Wednesday, November 29, 2006

A driver suspected of deliberately running into two Duquesne University hockey club players on the South Side last week turned himself in yesterday.

Nick Demine, 25, of Monroeville, surrendered to detectives at the South Side police station at 4:30 p.m.

He was charged with three counts of aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, reckless driving and accidents involving injury to persons.

Mr. Demine was accompanied by his lawyer and did not provide a statement to detectives.

He was identified by a passenger as the driver of the car that ran into Tim Fish and Mike Heath and an unidentified companion Nov. 20 in the parking lot of the Iron and Glass Bank on East Carson Street.

Police said words were exchanged between the two groups of men beforehand, then Mr. Demine lurched forward in the vehicle and struck the players, barely missing their friend.

All three of the victims are 22 years old. One managed to jump out of the way of the car, but Mr. Heath was hit and Mr. Fish was pinned between the car and a fence and required treatment for a leg fracture.

Mr. Demine was scheduled to be arraigned last night.
