UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Penguins center and leading scorer Sidney Crosby remains in the same holding pattern -- waiting for his sore groin to heal.
Crosby missed his second consecutive game yesterday, watching as his teammates fell to the New York Islanders, 3-1. As with the past two games, Crosby will evaluate things today before deciding whether he can play tonight at home against the New York Rangers.
Crosby skated in the pregame warmup -- with an afternoon start, there was no morning skate -- before he was scratched from the lineup.
"He tried, but he was not 100 percent, not ready to play," Penguins coach Michel Therrien said. "Maybe [today]. It's a day-to-day thing."
Crosby felt the groin tighten Monday night at Philadelphia and missed part of the second period and all the third of the Penguins' 5-3 win. He sat out the Penguins' 4-3 shootout loss to Boston on Wednesday.
Going, going, but not gone
A 1991-92 jersey worn by Penguins Hall of Fame center Mario Lemieux is part of the 2006 winter auction at www.Lelands.com and has a bid of nearly $13,000. He wore it the game after coach Bob "Badger" Johnson died, and it includes the "Badger" patch on the left shoulder. There are two other Lemieux sweaters and several others worn by Penguins in the auction.
Jagr makes his points
The Penguins held Jaromir Jagr scoreless last Saturday, but the Rangers' right winger has been prolific since the Penguins drafted him in the first round of the 1990 NHL draft.
Going into the games yesterday, Jagr, 34, led the league in points (34) and assists (23) and was tied for first in power-play points (17) and power-play assists (14).
He notched his 600th goal earlier this week and stands at 602, the most among players born in Europe.
With 864 assists, he is 36 shy of 900. With 1,466 points, he his 34 shy of 1,500.
With one point, he will tie Stan Mikita for the career points lead among players born in Europe.
Since 1990-91, his rookie season, Jagr has more points, goals and assists than any other NHL player.
If he can assemble a 100-point season to reach 1,532, he will pass Paul Coffey for 10th on the league's all-time list. A 50-goal season could move him up to 11th all-time on the NHL scoring list, although teammate Brendan Shanahan also is in contention for that spot.
Jagr also is in a three-way tie for the top spot all time with 14 overtime goals.
Which all adds up to a tough task keeping him scoreless again tonight.
