Point State Park still is open, although it's beginning to appear closed.
In preparation for the massive renovation slated for the park, fencing is being installed this week to restrict pedestrian traffic.
Access to the park will be permitted, however, until work crews are ready to begin digging up the walkways, park foreman John Samosky said.
Technically, the park is closed, Mr. Samosky said.
The state has scheduled public service announcements next week to alert visitors of the closing for the first stage of the three-phase reconstruction project, Mr. Samosky said.
Walkways eventually will be dug up for rebuilding of the park infrastructure. New networks will be installed for plumbing, electricity and sewage.
Organizers are considering delaying the digging portion through Dec. 3 to allow people to use the park for access to Heinz Field for the Steelers' home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Contractors have been given 420 working days to complete the renovation of the park by 2008, when Pittsburgh will celebrate its 250th anniversary.
