The Post-Gazette reviews movies from a family perspective:

'Deck the Halls'

Rated: PG.

Suitable for: Kindergartners and up.

What you should know: Matthew Broderick and Danny DeVito play Massachusetts neighbors who spar over Christmas decorations.

Language: A couple of very mild four-letter words.

Sexual situations and nudity: Jokes are made about a cross-dressing lawman, a woman who modeled for art classes and a pole fitting into a new bedroom. Men hoot at teenage girls.

Violence/scary situations: Mishaps involving fires, a runaway sleigh that sinks into an icy pond, skaters or runners who fall, and an old lady accidentally hit with a snowball.

Drug and alcohol use: A man is shown drinking beer, and other adults have wine.

'Deja Vu'

Rated: PG-13.

Suitable for: Mature teens and up.

What you should know: Denzel Washington plays an ATF agent investigating a cataclysmic explosion on a New Orleans ferry and the murder of a young woman, which may to be related.

Language: Surprisingly little, given the rating and subject matter.

Sexual situations and nudity: A woman is shown in her underwear and, from afar and with discretion, showering.

Violence/scary situations: A ferry turns into a fireball and begins to sink, sending 500-plus men, women and children to their deaths. The movie also dramatizes other explosions, a kidnapping, fatal gunshots, car crashes and evidence of a body set afire. A clothed corpse is on an autopsy table, and body bags are lined up.

Alcohol and drug use: Nothing notable, but a joke about hash.

'The Fountain'

Rated: PG-13.

Suitable for: Age 17 and up -- this is not for kids.

What you should know: From the strange mind of director/co-writer Darren Aronofsky come stories in three time periods that are interwoven to create an artsy, bizarre collage about love, death and the importance of seizing the day: A 16th-century conquistador questing for the fountain of youth, a researcher trying to save his dying wife in the present day, and scenes from the distant future that take place in a space-bound bubble.

Language: The f-word and s-word are used in one scene, and milder words are used in the present-day segment.

Sexual situations and nudity: A married couple kisses and cuddles and consoles each other. They get passionate in one bathtub scene, but there is no nudity.

Violence/scary situations: In Spain during the Inquisition, there are scenes of torture. The conquistador and his crew are attacked by spear-throwing Mayans, and we see the close-up results of being speared. In the present day, a lab monkey is operated on in a research facility, and a woman faces dying of a brain tumor, while her husband goes through turmoil as he obsesses about saving her. He punctures himself to create a tattoo in one emotional scene.

Drug and alcohol use: Nothing notable.

'For Your Consideration'

Rated: PG-13.

Suitable for: Mature tweens and older.

What you should know: Christopher Guest ("A Mighty Wind," "Best in Show") skewers Hollywood. With his band of regulars, he shows what happens to an indie film when Oscar buzz begins.

Language: One f-word.

Sexual situations and nudity: The movie within the movie has a plot point about a character who is a lesbian.

Violence/scary situations: None.

Drug and alcohol use: Adults drink to celebrate or drown their sorrows.
