CHELSEY O'DONNELL

SCHOOL: West Allegheny.

WHO IS SHE? A 5-foot-7 senior setter on the West Allegheny girls' volleyball team.

MOST VALUABLE: O'Donnell was the MVP of the PIAA Class AA tournament last weekend at Central York High School. Her stellar play helped West Allegheny win the title for the first time in school history. She had 45 assists in the final match against Brandywine Heights.

"She's just an outstanding leader. She's been kind of the heart of our team," West Allegheny coach Curt Russell said. "She made things happen for us out on the court."

FOUR TIMES: West Allegheny had a number of experienced players on this year's team. But O'Donnell was the only four-year starter.

ALWAYS A SETTER: Hitters get most of the glory in volleyball, but O'Donnell has never desired to spike the ball.

"I've always been a setter, ever since I started playing volleyball in seventh grade," O'Donnell said. "I don't know anything else. I love it. I like how you can control the tempo of a game. You can slow it down if it's too tense, or you can speed it up if the other team is hanging with you. I like the mental part of it."

THE FUTURE: O'Donnell, who has a 3.7 grade-point average, has not decided on a college, but hopes to play volleyball in the future.

DA'VON MOORE

SCHOOL: Brentwood.

WHO IS HE? A swift running back, inside linebacker and kick returner for the Spartans (10-1), who will take on Jeannette (10-1) in a WPIAL Class AA semifinal tomorrow at Elizabeth Forward.

PAST WEEK: A 5-foot-11, 205-pound senior, Moore established the defensive tone of the Spartans' 12-7 quarterfinal victory against Seton-LaSalle Friday. With the Rebels on the Brentwood 6 in the opening minutes of a scoreless game, he intercepted a Matt Rodgers pass and raced 97 yards for a touchdown.

"Coach [Greg] Perry [of Seton-LaSalle] said last week he was worried about what Da'Von can do on offense. Well, he showed what he can do on defense," Brentwood coach Kevin Kissel said.

SEASON: Kissel starts Moore at tailback, but will switch him to wingback or wide receiver to maximize his game-breaking skills. He has gained 900 yards on 174 carries (5.2), caught 29 passes for 502 yards (17.3) and scored 21 touchdowns.

"You should see film of some of his returns when he was a freshman and sophomore," Kissel said.

Moore has added 25 pounds since last season.

CAREER: Moore, whose first name is pronounced DAY-von, has started on offense and defense for four seasons and has returned kickoffs and punts throughout. He has scored 42 touchdowns. Moore played in the secondary until this year.

TALENTED BROTHER: Brentwood has gotten even more from the Moore family. Da'Von's younger brother, Akeem, is a 6-1, 180-pound junior wide receiver.

FUTURE: Pitt, Akron, Toledo and Temple are Division I programs that have offered scholarships to Moore, who has a 3.0 grade-point average.
