This seems to be a big year for Shelby Mustangs, with a number of models coming out in everything from 1/64 to 1/18 scale. But the best news is that these models come in all varieties, years and colors of these remarkable muscle cars of the 1960s and early 1970s.
Still, Lane's products are in a class by themselves. Take the KR (King of the Road) 500 coupe, for instance.
According to "365 Cars You Must Drive," Carroll Shelby, who was the "father" of the Mustang Shelby, took a liking to Ford's new 428 Cobra Jet V-8, and wanted to feature it in a special model. At the same time, Chevy was working on a Chevelle muscle car that would have carried the name "King of The Road" in 1969.
But Mr. Shelby decided he wanted to one-up the Chevy gang and took the name for his baby -- and the Chevelle "King of the Road" never was introduced.
The 1968 GT500KR had that big 335-horsepower V-8 that could hit 60 in 6.9 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph. Though the coupe sold for $4,472, these cars now go for around $200,000.
The GT500KR model is so accurate that it comes with a finely detailed real mesh grille. There's beautiful brushed aluminum inside and out, and the gauges are so well detailed that it looks as though they are behind glass. There also are roll bars inside, an important detail of this particular make.
The alloy wheels are the 10-spoke Shelby design and are nicely finished. Even the V-8 engine with its huge oval-shaped air cleaner is a work of art and has all the appropriate markings, hoses and underhood identification plates and stickers.
Lane also re-creates the 1967 Mustang GT 500, which comes with all of the features previously mentioned and more. Both models have a rubber fan belt, fabric seat belts, soft touch seats and countless other details almost too numerous to mention.
All of the model year differentiations between these two models have been nicely duplicated, too -- there's no cutting of corners or economizing by shoving the same interior or engine into a model year-appropriate body.
One final detail: Mr. Shelby was known for his cowboy hats, and there's a tiny miniature one in the trunks of these models.
There's nothing to criticize in these two models -- and a lot to love. They retail for about $110, and as you might expect, they are available in extremely limited quantities, about 1,250 each.
