An Armstrong County man died early Saturday when he fell from a loft bed at a hunting camp and impaled himself on a chair.
James Schuey Jr., 42, of the Worthington area, had taken his 17-year-old son and three of his son's friends to the Washington Township camp.
According to the Armstrong County coroner's office, Mr. Schuey was sleeping in the loft in the one-room cabin, with the boys sleeping on beds below. About 12:30 a.m., Mr. Schuey apparently rolled out of the loft and onto a metal chair whose back was decorated with spikes. One of the spikes penetrated his chest, tearing an artery.
The boys attempted to treat the wound and one of them had to leave the camp to get a cell phone signal to call for help.
Mr. Schuey was conscious when paramedics arrived, the coroner's office said, but his conditioned worsened. The helicopter landed instead at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital in Kittanning.
He was declared dead of blood loss at 1:55 a.m.
