Charitable fund raiser sparked by Oprah
Sunday, November 12, 2006

A Liberty International Studies Elementary School teacher who, along with her mother, developed a plan to provide new shoes to schoolchildren and have them raise money with a walk-a-thon, will be returning to the set of the "Oprah Winfrey Show" on Nov. 21.

In late October, Abbie Silverman and her mother, Claudette, were in the studio when Oprah provided each guest with $1,000. She challenged them to use the cash for the best charitable fund possible.

She also equipped the guests with a video camera, so they could document their plan and -- perhaps -- have it featured on the show.

Ms. Silverman said yesterday she still doesn't know if her plan, which raised (counting in-kind donations) some $50,000, will be showcased. "The producers are being very secretive," said Ms. Silverman, a first-grade teacher.

The mother and daughter joined forces with Little's shoe store in Squirrel Hill, and found a shoe outfitter, Merrell, willing to donate new shoes to the roughly 400 students at Liberty elementary in Shadyside. Those students had a walk-a-thon the next day, raising $20,000, Ms. Silverman said.

Friends and other companies that heard about the mission provided money or in-kind contributions. Together, the sum is being used for the development of a library at Children's Hospital.
