Route 65 repairs in Kilbuck moving to passing lane
Thursday, November 09, 2006

Repairs to Route 65 southbound at the site of the massive landslide in Kilbuck will move to the passing lane starting Monday.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said the contractor will complete work on the curb lane this week. John Gulisek Construction Co., of Mount Pleasant, began the repairs two weeks ago on a 1,000-foot-long stretch of the four-lane highway.

The next phase also is expected to take two weeks, meaning that southbound traffic on Ohio River Boulevard will continue to be limited to one lane starting around Toms Run Road.

The concrete is being removed and replaced. Because new concrete takes time to cure, lanes cannot be immediately reopened even though work appears completed, PennDOT said.

Plans to repair the northbound lanes, already restricted to a single lane, have yet to be submitted to PennDOT.

On Sept. 19, about 500,000 cubic yards of fill material slid off the construction site where developers were building a shopping plaza and Wal-Mart Supercenter.

The rocks and debris closed Route 65 for two weeks. The slope has yet to be fully stabilized.

ASC Development and its affiliate, Kilbuck Properties LP, have asked the state to give it an extra month, until Dec. 1, to submit a remediation plan for the slide-prone site.
