Bob Bartley threw four touchdown passes, including two in the final 1:15, to lead Hampton to a 29-28 win against Keystone Oaks in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs last night at Dormont Stadium.
The victory earned Hampton (5-5), the fourth-place finisher in the Greater Allegheny Conference, a fourth consecutive berth in the quarterfinals. The Talbots will meet No. 3 seed Blackhawk (9-1) Friday or next Saturday.
Bartley completed 20 of 40 passes for 371 yards and connected with Joe Cangilla on 12 of those passes, which covered 252 yards and three touchdowns.
Bartley connected with Cangilla on a 61-yard scoring strike in the first quarter, then found Dan O'Mara on a 22-yard scoring play in the third quarter.
Bartley and Cangilla connected on a 10-yard touchdown pass with 1:15 left. The Talbots then recovered an onside kick and scored again with 0:13 remaining on a 6-yard scoring pass from Bartley to Cangilla.
Keystone Oaks (6-4), the second-place finisher from the Big Seven Conference, competed in the Greater Allegheny Conference the past two seasons and Hampton recorded regular-season wins of 42-0 and 49-20. Talbots tailback Steve Paskorz rushed for a combined 562 yards in those two games, but did not play last night because of a hamstring injury that has sidelined him for the rest of the season.
Without Paskorz, the Talbots were held to 0 yards on the ground.
The fine outing by Bartley overshadowed the strong performance of the Golden Eagles' John Fuhrer, who rushed for 239 yards on 34 carries and scored on runs of 4 and 50 yards.
OTHER GAMES
Thomas Jefferson 48, Ringgold 7
Dom DeCicco completed 3 of 5 passes for 83 yards for the top-seeded Jaguars, and all three went for touchdowns. DeCicco connected with Chris Drager on scoring passes of 26 and 13 yards, and with Trevor Wildman on a 44-yard scoring play.
Thomas Jefferson (10-0) also scored on touchdown runs of 47 and 10 yards by Dan Giegerich, and runs of 31 and 5 yards by Brian Baldridge. Giegerich rushed for 101 yards on eight carries.
Ringgold (3-7) had only 76 yards in total offense, while Thomas Jefferson accumulated 350 yards. Rams tailback Kyle Fisher-Law was held to 27 yards on 12 carries.
Thomas Jefferson will meet Moon (6-4) in the quarterfinals Friday or next Saturday.
Pine-Richland 57, Laurel Highlands 16
Vince Veltre scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards, while Ben Scherer added touchdown runs of 1 and 3 yards, as No. 2 seed Pine-Richland (10-0) rolled to an easy first-round victory against Laurel Highlands (4-6).
Rams quarterback Spencer Whipple completed 12 of 15 passes for 169 yards and connected with Matt Klimczyk on an 8-yard scoring pass and with Brian Felker on a 27-yarder.
Laurel Highlands was led by Dan Pegg, who completed 23 of 43 passes for 269 yards and one touchdown.
Pine-Richland will meet Highlands (8-2) in the quarterfinals. Pine-Richland defeated Highlands, 21-18, in Greater Allegheny Conference play four weeks ago.
Blackhawk 7, Chartiers Valley 6
An extra point by Jacob Wehar, and a missed extra point by Joe Kelly, was the difference, as No. 3 seed Blackhawk (9-1) survived with this narrow win against Chartiers Valley (4-6).
Blackhawk broke a scoreless tie with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Brian Sweeney to Jesse Sylvester with 6:03 left in the third quarter, and Wehar added the extra point.
Chartiers Valley scored with 3:23 left in the third quarter on a 25-yard run by Santino Coury, but the extra point by Kelly failed.
Blackhawk had only 144 yards in total offense, most of which came from Sweeney, who completed 9 of 17 passes for 103 yards.
Blackhawk will face Hampton (5-5) in the quarterfinals.
Franklin Regional 30, West Allegheny 14
Lee Howatneck rushed for 126 yards on 20 carries and scored on runs of 9 and 2 yards to lead Franklin Regional (9-1) to a first-round win against West Allegheny (4-6).
Franklin Regional, the No. 4 seed and defending WPIAL and PIAA champion, built a 30-0 lead before West Allegheny scored. The Indians scored on touchdown passes of 14 and 5 yards from Zak Sinclair to Ricky Deveraux. Sinclair completed 15 of 23 passes for 197 yards.
Franklin Regional will take on Hopewell (9-1) in the quarterfinals.
Moon 35, Belle Vernon 0
Michael Battles set a Moon High School record by rushing for 302 yards on 30 carries, as the Tigers (6-4) rolled to an easy road victory against Belle Vernon (5-5). Battles, who scored on runs of 20, 7, and 6 yards, broke the record of 287 previously set by Austin Sykes in 2002.
Moon also scored on a 1-yard run by Ryan Falbo and a 31-yard pass from Falbo to Andy Dowdell.
Moon accumulated 408 yards in total offense, while limiting Belle Vernon to 50 yards.
Moon will face top-seeded Thomas Jefferson (10-0) in the quarterfinals.
Highlands 34, Mount Pleasant 14
Highlands (8-2) made it a perfect night for the Greater Allegheny, as all four qualifiers recorded victories. The Rams were making their first playoff appearance since 2003 and have had the biggest turnaround of any WPIAL team, after posting a 2-7 record last year. Mount Pleasant (5-5), the Keystone Conference champion, suffered a fourth consecutive first-round loss.
