Home and garden briefs: Rose Society holding annual bush auction

The Pittsburgh Rose Society will hold its annual rose bush auction from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. today at St. Augustine auditorium on 37th Street in Lawrenceville.

Hybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras and miniature rose bushes from members' gardens will be auctioned. Admission is free. A raffle for door prizes and rose bushes will also be held.

Steelers open house

The Steelers' Sundays are usually spoken for, but Saturdays? They've got time to appear at open houses.

From 1 to 2 p.m. today, running back Verron Haynes will be at the Portsmouth model home in Heartland Homes' Sonoma Ridge development in Moon.

Next Saturday, cornerback Deshea Townsend will take part in a meet-and-greet from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Westminster model of Foxchase in North Strabane, Washington County.

Community tree program

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 14, Penn State University will sponsor a seminar for those interested in starting a community tree program.

Among the topics at Penn State's McKeesport campus:

"Why Start a Municipal Tree Program" by Mark Remcheck; "Writing a Tree Ordinance" by Dr. Bill Elmemdorf; "Tree Inventories & Management" by Diana Ames; "Don't Top Trees" by Mike Mcnamara; and "Working With Volunteers" by Scott Sjolander.
