District College Roundup: CMU goes overtime to remain unbeaten
Tartans strike down Washington, 10-7

Carnegie Mellon won its first outright University Athletic Association championship since 1997 as Nat Greenstein kicked a 22-yard field goal in overtime to lift the visiting Tartans to a 10-7 victory at Washington (Mo.) University yesterday.

CMU (8-0, 4-0) kept alive its hopes of receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The Tartans finish the regular season against Bethany at home Saturday and at Thiel, Nov. 11.

The previous time CMU went 10-0 and reached the playoffs was 1990.

The Tartans' winning field goal came moments after Mike Elliott's 32-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide for Washington (5-4, 2-1).

CMU took a 7-0 lead on quarterback Doug Facemyer's 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, but Washington tied it at 7-7 later in quarter on Pat McCarthy's 27-yard pass to Nick Lizanich.

CMU's Travis Sivek rushed for 83 yards on 25 carries and Facemyer completed 3 of 10 passes for 19 yards. The Tartans, who failed to have a 100-yard rusher for the first time this season, had 126 yards on the ground. They entered averaging 282 yards rushing per game.

Robert Morris 21, Stony Brook 6: The visiting Colonials (6-3, 4-1) capitalized on four turnovers to defeat the Seawolves (4-5, 4-1) and move into a tie with them for first place in the Northeast Conference. For Robert Morris, Brian Harden rushed for 60 yards and a 20-yard touchdown and Erik Cwalinski completed 12 of 18 passes for 128 yards.

California 35, Shippensburg 20: Brandon Lombardy had career highs with 40 carries and 178 yards, scoring on runs of 2 and 3 yards, to lead the visiting Vulcans (7-2, 4-0) against the Red Raiders (4-5, 2-2) in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West. Nate Forse had four catches for 140 yards, including touchdowns of 63 and 53 yards from Joe Ruggiero.

IUP 42, Mansfield 6: Chris Morgan rushed for 122 yards and touchdowns of 8, 49 and 7 yards and the defense scored twice on fumble returns as host IUP (7-1) won its fifth in a row against Mansfield (0-8).

Slippery Rock 24, Edinboro 21: Ryan Daniels' 41-yard field goal in overtime gave the host Rock (6-3, 3-2) the victory against the Fighting Scots (4-5, 1-3) in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock's Travis Sarver rushed for 72 yards and two touchdowns and Nate Crookshank passed for 214 yards and a touchdown. For Edinboro, Trevor Harris passed for 258 yards and three touchdowns and Ryan Valasek had six catches for 131 yards and a touchdown.

Youngstown State 27, Illinois State 13: In a matchup of teams ranked in Division I-AA scholarship, the No. 10 Penguins (7-2, 4-1) defeated the No. 3 Redbirds (6-2, 3-1) in the Gateway Football Conference. The visiting Penguins were led by Marcus Mason's 176 yards rushing and two touchdowns and Tom Zetts' 112 yards rushing and a touchdown. Youngstown State held Illinois State's Pierre Rembert, the nation's third-leading rusher with a 148.9-yard average, to 14 yards on 11 carries.

Rochester 38, Grove City 21: Andrew DiDonato completed 27 of 47 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns, but it wasn't enough for the host Wolverines (1-7).

Ohio Dominican 41, Geneva 14: For visiting Geneva (3-4), Justin Sciarro completed 16 of 32 passes for 229 yards and touchdowns of 16 yards to Brian Dvorsak and 4 yards to Mike Lehman.

St. Francis, Ind. 55, Seton Hill 0: In a game called at 11:40 of the fourth quarter because of lightning, the host Griffins (1-8) managed just eight first downs and 175 yards. Ray Rowland rushed for 91 yards. St. Francis (8-0) had 545 yards of offense.

Frostburg State 16, Westminster 13: For visiting Westminster (2-6), Josh Weese scored on a 23-yard fumble recovery.

Lock Haven 14, Clarion 7: Rafael Smith caught a 44-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to help give Lock Haven (2-7, 1-4) a 14-0 advantage in the PSAC West contest. Clarion (1-8, 0-4) closed the gap on a 32-yard touchdown reception by Pierre Odom with 6:52 to play.

Allegheny 30, Ohio Wesleyan 13: The Gators (5-3, 3-2) used a 162-yard rushing performance from Mario Tarquinio and two touchdown passes from Jimmy Savage to top visiting Ohio Wesleyan in a North Coast Athletic Conference night game.
