Saturday, October 28, 2006

HARRISBURG -- Gov. Ed Rendell has raised more than $30 million for his re-election campaign and has more than $6 million left for a final push with 10 days until the election.

Republican challenger Lynn Swann, meanwhile, raised nearly $10 million and has $540,000 left to spend, campaign finance reports show.

In the last reporting period, which ran from Sept. 19 through Monday, Mr. Rendell raised $3.7 million and spent $11.7 million.

Mr. Swann, meanwhile, added $1.9 million to his treasury, bringing his fund-raising total to $9.6 million. He spent $5.2 million during the reporting period and had $319,000 left as of Monday, the last day of the filing period.

Since Monday, he has raised at least $220,500 and Mr. Rendell at least $675,000. Candidates are now required to file more frequently in the days leading up to the election.

Mr. Rendell's top contributor is the Democratic Governors Association in Washington, D.C. The $258,697 given in the last reporting period brings the association's contributions to just over $1 million for the campaign.

For the Swann campaign, top financiers are Bob and Doylene Perry, of Houston, Texas, with a total of $400,000 in contributions between them. Mr. Perry, owner of Perry Homes, was a major contributor to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the group that in 2004 attacked presidential candidate John Kerry's Vietnam service.

The Republican Governors Association in Washington, D.C., meanwhile poured another $301,000 into the Swann campaign.

Samuel Black, an insurance agent from Erie, gave Mr. Swann $100,500. Meanwhile, $100,000 donations were reported from Templeton Foundation Chairman John Templeton, of Bryn Mawr; Kim and Terrence Pegula, of Hilton Head, S.C.; and B. Wayne Hughes of Glendale, Calif.

In Mr. Rendell's $100,000 club for the last reporting period are the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98 political action committee and Friends of Bob Mellow. Mr. Mellow, of Lackawanna County, is the state Senate's minority leader.

Mr. Rendell's contributions last quarter came from 21 states and the District of Columbia.

Mr. Swann's came from 41 states and D.C.
