South Park graduate Dan Gal won a pair of titles at the PSAC men's tennis championships Oct. 7-8 at Shippensburg University.

Gal, a sophomore at Bloomsburg University, teamed up with Ryan Chow to win the doubles tournament. Gal and Chow posted an 8-2 win over Jeff Kurz and Andrew Sorsi of West Chester in the semifinals. In the title match, the duo beat Rubens Vianna and Arpit Sharma of Kutztown by an 8-4 score.

Gal won four consecutive matches in the singles bracket after being seeded second. He opened the weekend with a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Somdeep Appineni of Kutztown, then beat Chris Matisse of Millersville in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. Gal faced Chow in the semifinals and recorded a 6-2, 6-2. In the title match, he win beat top-seed Santiago Baquerizo of Kutztown, 6-2, 7-6 (10-8).

TJ grad passing fancy

Thomas Jefferson graduate Kevin Franz completed 18 of 28 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns for Westminster in Saturday's 49-13 blowout of Bethany.

In seven games, this freshman has completed 141 of 201 passes for 1,338 yards and 10 touchdowns.

SV's Shields lifts Waynesburg

Steel Valley graduate Mike Shields caught six passes for 41 yards for Waynesburg in Saturday's 34-24 win over Thiel.

Shields also caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Tres Cobb. For the season, Shields leads the Yellow Jackets with 20 receptions for 262 yards and four touchdowns.

Duquesne golfers excel

Shaler Area graduate Mike Hartman, a freshman at Duquesne University, set two school records at Robert Morris' 12th annual Crowne Plaza Colonial Classic, which took place Oct. 9-10 at Montour Heights Country Club.

Hartman shot a school record and tournament-low 66 on the second day of competition to capture the individual title with a two-day total of 139, which set a school record for two rounds. He won the 11-team event by four strokes.

Hartman's teammate Brendan Madden finished fifth in the tournament with a two-day total of 147 (72-75). Madden is a sophomore who graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School.

Duquesne finished fifth in the competition with a score of 608.

National soccer honor

Shady Side Academy graduate Tom Sochacki was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for the week ending Oct. 15.

Sochacki, a senior at Duquesne University, scored two goals in Sunday's 3-2, overtime win over Xavier, including the short-handed game-winner in overtime.
