1 injured in love triangle showdown
Tuesday, October 24, 2006

Two men met and fought over a woman yesterday in Versailles, where one combatant was armed with a baseball bat and the other with a shotgun.

Shawn Burtner, 43, of McKeesport, was wounded in the showdown when he was blasted with birdshot on his back and neck at 6:52 p.m. behind the Croatian Club in Versailles, investigators said.

Alex Fazekas, 49, of Versailles, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment, Allegheny County Police Lt. Christopher Kearns said.

The two men had been quarreling for some time over the affection of Kathy Good, 36. She had lived for some time with Mr. Fazekas until they broke up and she took up with Mr. Burtner, Versailles police Chief William Kruczek said.

After about a month with Mr. Burtner, Ms. Good returned to Mr. Fazekas' home.

Mr. Fazekas eventually filed a complaint that he had been receiving threatening phone calls from Mr. Burtner, who made similar counter claims when confronted by police yesterday about two hours before his showdown with Mr. Fazekas, Chief Kruczek said.

The two men agreed to meet behind the club to settle their differences.

Mr. Burtner was treated for his wounds last night at UPMC McKeesport and released by 2 a.m., police said.

Mr. Burtner also told police that he suspected Mr. Fazekas would receive preferential treatment because he is the younger brother of Versailles Mayor Emerson Fazekas.

Chief Kruczek assured him that both men would be treated fairly.

Both men may be charged in connection with events that led up to the fight, Chief Kruczek said.
