Fantasy Football: QB injuries take a toll
Monday, October 23, 2006

I wonder if Oakland is who Denny Green thought they were?

I'm just saying???

After the Raiders dominated Green's Cardinals without their starting quarterback and running back, I admit to a certain degree of surprise. Then again, Matt Leinart is who I thought he was: a rookie with great potential that will have his ups and downs this season. You have to like his chances against Green Bay on Sunday, but isn't that what you thought about his matchup with Oakland?

No sooner had Ben Roethlisberger returned to what we thought he was, with his second excellent outing in a row, than his Nightmare of 2006 resumed. After his latest head/neck injury, it is clear that Big Ben needs to avoid dangerous activities -- like riding motorcycles and playing quarterback in the NFL.

Matt Hasselbeck was living up to expectations, even if his team wasn't. But after spraining his right knee on an ugly hit, Seattle is suddenly in a pickle. Shaun Alexander can't return soon enough, and without Hasselbeck directing the offense, the fantasy prospects of every Seahawk will suffer.

I don't know what the Jaguars are any more, but the Texans are a much better team when they can run. Denny Green might want to look into that. And if Andre Johnson isn't Fantasyland's Comeback Player of the Year, I don't know who is.

Matt Bryant's 62-yard, game-winning field goal for Tampa Bay was a shocker to everyone, including him. Too bad it wasn't a factor for the 99 percent of fantasy players who didn't own, or start, him.

You think Peyton Manning felt he had to make up for stranding his owners during last week's bye? In a scene reminiscent of his banner season of 2004, Manning threw touchdown passes of 1, 1 and 4 yards each, in addition to a beautiful 51-yard rainbow to Reggie Wayne. The Colts' passing attack is every bit as potent as ever; and in case you were wondering, the transition to Joseph Addai as starting/primary running back is nearly complete.

Finally, if you were ever tempted to bench Larry Johnson due to an apparent bad matchup, let Sunday's game against San Diego be a lesson to you. Hopefully you didn't learn it the hard way.

FREE AGENT PICKS AND PANS

To win a fantasy championship, you need to start with a good draft. But filling in your roster throughout the season with the right free agents is equally important. Here's a look at a few players worth grabbing, and others who would look better in someone else's lineup.

Catch 'em while you can

Joey Harrington, QB, Dolphins: In three games as the starter, he has thrown for 912 yards and 3 TDs, racking up big stats while playing from behind. That should continue after Miami's bye, but beware: He's also thrown seven INTs during that time.

Wali Lundy, RB, Texans: Don't get your hopes up too high, but if Lundy is available and you need help at RB, go get him. His performance on Sunday should have solidified his hold on the starting job, for now, and Tennessee is up next.

Santonio Holmes, WR, Steelers: Pittsburgh's first-round pick has worked his way into the game plan, and seems poised to claim the starting job opposite Hines Ward. Holmes is a big-play threat with greater potential than Cedric Wilson and the undrafted Nate Washington.

Adam Vinatieri, K, Colts: He may have been dropped after missing three games with a groin injury. But he remained perfect for the season after returning this week, and will reclaim his status as one of the most reliable fantasy kickers as part of the Indy offense.

Don't be fooled

Michael Vick, QB, Falcons: Sell! Sell! Sell! Sunday's four-touchdown performance was his first career day with more than two scoring passes. It also follows three consecutive weeks without a TD pass. Today marks the definition of "selling high."

Bobby Engram, WR, Seahawks: He has been diagnosed with Graves' disease and his timetable for return is unknown. With Matt Hasselbeck's injury and the emergence of Deion Branch, Engram's stock has tanked, and he no longer merits a roster spot.

Matt Bryant, K, Buccaneers: Don't let his 62-yard field goal fool you. Nobody, including his coach, thought he would make it, but the odds were deemed better than a Hail Mary pass. Bryant is not terribly accurate, and his team gives him few opportunities.

Fantasy Bad Breaks Week 7

LaDainian Tomlinson, RB, Chargers: A rushing score would have completed the trifecta, but he was stuffed on two attempts from the Chiefs' 1.

Dominic Rhodes, RB, Colts: Failed to score on two carries from the Redskins' 1.

Chad Johnson, WR, Bengals: Tackled at the 3 after a 32-yard reception.

Randy Moss, WR, Raiders: Dropped a well-thrown pass in the end zone.

Eddie Kennison, WR, Chiefs: Missed a second TD opportunity when his nine-yard reception was stopped at the 1.

Keenan McCardell, WR, Chargers: His 18-yard reception fell one yard shy of pay dirt.

Marvin Harrison, WR, Colts: Caught two short TD passes, but another was overturned on a replay challenge.
