This one's for pride, with a touch of revenge thrown in just to spice things up.
That's how coach Rich Lackner is approaching today's University Athletic Association matchup between his Carnegie Mellon Tartans (6-0) and the University of Chicago Maroons (2-3) at noon at Gesling Stadium.
"I see this as a game between a team that prides itself on the run versus a team that prides itself on defending the run," Lackner said. "Hopefully, our guys remember what Chicago did to us last year. They put a licking on us."
The Tartans still are licking their wounds from the 35-6 thrashing they took in 2005.
"It's a whole new year," said Lackner, whose Tartans most likely must be unbeaten to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
CMU averages 32 points and 282 yards rushing per game, led by Travis Sivek's 113.5 yards per game and seven touchdowns and Robert Gimson's 99.7 yards and seven touchdowns.
Chicago gives up just 80.4 yards rushing per game and hasn't given up 100 yards to an opposing runner. CMU's defense, led by backs Aaron Lewis and Jon Scholl, allows 10.3 points per game to rank 18th in Division III.
"We know what's at stake," Lackner said. "We know how important each game is."
