From sheets to cutlery, bamboo has many uses

High-grade bamboo is one of today's hottest flooring materials, especially among homeowners looking for environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional hardwood. But this strong, versatile grass is also popping up in other parts of the house.

Serving bowls, cutlery, counter tops, furniture, wall and window coverings and garden accessories are available. You can even buy bamboo sheets, blankets and shower curtains.

Much of bamboo's appeal is derived from its clean, modern look. But it is also incredibly strong, as well as naturally resistant to water. So it's a natural in the kitchen and bath.

Totally Bamboo sells laminated bamboo counter tops and kitchen islands in four grain patterns. The California-based company also offers a selection of chairs, cutting boards and bowls and plates. You can also find bamboo bowls and flatware at Chef's Resource and Smith & Hawken; the latter also sells disposable plates made from organically grown bamboo peeled directly from the stalk.

Looking for furniture? Some of the more interesting bamboo products at Crate & Barrel include a six-drawer "Bento" dresser, chifforobe, TV cabinet and a bed in three sizes. Master Garden Products carries bamboo chairs, loungers, tables and tiki huts.

Bamboo Hardwoods has a selection of bamboo fences, gates, patio furniture and garden accessories, along with prefabricated gazebos and huts. Bamboo Fencer features an entire line of bamboo stick, cane and rolled fences. It also sells "bricks" that can be used as wall coverings.

Bamboo's strong fibers also make it an ideal material for bedding. Bamboo sheets and blankets are as soft and silky as cotton but have the added benefit of being naturally hypoallergenic -- giving those with allergies a good night's sleep. They're available at stores such as Target, Lands' End and Garnet Hill.
