Product recalls: Coffee makers, plush toys, tents, climbing equipment, batteries

Coffee makers

Starbucks is recalling about 73,000 Barista Aroma stainless steel eight-cup coffee brewers. The brewers may have defective electrical wiring that can result in overheating, smoking, burning and melting, posing a possible fire hazard.

Starbucks has received 23 reports of melting in the plastic housing of the brewers.

The recall includes the Starbucks Barista Aroma eight-cup brewer only. "Starbucks Barista Aroma" is embossed on the front of the brewer and the brewer has silver control panel buttons and a chrome finish.

The products were sold at Starbucks stores nationwide between March 2005 and September 2006 for about $100. Consumers should contact Starbucks for a full refund. Consumers will receive a postage-paid package along with instructions on how to return their brewer. Starbucks is also offering a coupon (valid through Jan. 31) for a free pound of coffee as an incentive to return the recalled machine.

Plush toys

The Betesh Group is recalling about 31,000 Baby Cookie Monster toys. The small felt fabric cookie attached to the toy's hand can be removed easily and ingested by young children, posing a choking hazard.

The recall involves the Baby Cookie Monster plush toy packaged with Sesame Beginnings Make Music Together DVDs. The blue plush toy has a small, felt fabric cookie attached to its hand. The plush toy and DVD are packaged in a yellow and green box with the words "Sesame Beginnings" and "Make Music Together" printed on the front. The product is labeled for children ages 6 months and up.

The products were sold exclusively at Wal-Mart stores nationwide from March to July for about $15.

Consumers should remove the felt cookie and its connecting thread from the plush toy and dispose of them.

Tents, canopies

Decathlon USA is recalling about 22,000 Quechua Brand tents and canopies. The tents may fail to meet the industry's flame resistant standard, posing a fire hazard.

The recall includes all 2006 model Quechua branded tents (2-Seconds, 2-Seconds Air, 3-Seconds Air, T2, T3 Air, T4 Air, T6.2XL Air, T2 Ultralight Tents, T0 and T0+ canopies) sold in orange, red, blue, camouflage or beige with SKU numbers 350808, 65196, 86813 146552, 146548, 100986, 351219, 370833, 531980, 531989, 65024, 90366, 90428, 567008, 567009, 567036, 567032, 370973, 22611, 566985 and 566992. The SKU number can be found on the self-carry jacket. Quechua is printed on the exterior of the tent or canopy and on some of the carrying bags.

The products were sold at Decathlon USA retail stores in Massachusetts or through online sales at www.decathlontent.com from January through September for $15 to $150.

Consumers should call Decathlon USA for information on returning the tents for a refund plus an extra $10. Consumers who purchased tents through the Web site or over the phone will receive notices from Decathlon. Climbing equipment

Petzl America is recalling about 8,000 carabiners used for climbing. The carabiners have a green button that acts as a safety mechanism to prevent unlocking. The carabiners can unlock unexpectedly, posing a fall hazard.

The recall involves the M34 BL Am'D Ball-Lock and M36 BL William Ball Lock carabiners with metal locking sleeves. Carabiners with batch number between 06076 and 06178 are included in the recall. The batch number is engraved on the spine of the carabiner. The recall does not include Ball Lock carabiners with a plastic locking sleeve.

The devices were sold at Petzl dealers nationwide from March through July for about $13 for the Am'D model and about $17 for the William model.

Consumers should contact Petzl America to have their carabiners inspected and to receive a free replacement, if necessary. Bicycle light batteries

Light & Motion is recalling about 1,700 bicycle light batteries. The batteries can overheat, posing a fire or burn hazard.

The recalled batteries were made by GP Batteries International of Singapore and imported by Gold Peak Industries of San Diego.

The recalled batteries are found in Light & Motion 2004 ARC Li-Ion HID lighting systems. The lights are black with "ARC" and "LIGHT & MOTION" written in yellow letters. The recall includes only batteries with a manufacturer date code of 1003 or 1103. The date code is stamped on the bottom of the battery and "LIGHT & MOTION" is printed on the side of the battery.

The batteries were sold at authorized bicycle dealers nationwide from November 2003 through October 2004 for about $500.
