Three south suburban residents -- Ryan Mendel, Tom McCafferty and Nick Cherish -- played a big part in Washington & Jefferson College's convincing 50-7 Presidents' Athletic Conference victory over Westminster on Saturday.
Mendel, a senior running back who graduated from Brentwood High School, rushed for 131 yards and three touchdowns.
For the season, Mendel has rushed for 723 yards and seven touchdowns on 146 carries. He has also returned 11 kickoffs for 204 yards, for an 18.5 average per kick.
McCafferty, a junior wide receiver who graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, caught four passes for 76 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown reception from Bobby Swallow. In six games, McCafferty has 24 catches for 296 yards and five touchdowns.
Cherish, a senior free safety who also graduated from Thomas Jefferson, recorded his 11th career interception.
It was the second pick of the season for Cherish, who has recorded 14 solo tackles and 16 assists.
Baldwin grad helps Pitt
Baldwin graduate Diana Andreyko is in her third season on the Pitt women's volleyball team.
Andreyko, a 5-11 junior outside hitter who was named Big East Rookie of the Year as a freshman, has recorded a team-high 309 kills (4.12 per game).
She has recorded 20 or more kills 12 times during her career.
The Panthers take a 16-6 overall record and 5-2 Big East mark into a match tomorrow at Marquette.
CCAC-South wins title
The baseball team at Community College of Allegheny County-South Campus won the Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association fall championship over Northhampton Community College in Bethlehem, Pa.
The best two out of three series was played on Saturday with CCAC-South Tigers winning the first two games 10-4 and 5-4.
CCAC-South's Ron Rocco was named PCAA coach of the year.
It's better to receive
Woodland Hills graduate Rafael Smith caught seven passes for 117 yards and a touchdown for Lock Haven University in Saturday's 20-17 overtime loss to Shippensburg.
It's the most yardage recorded by a Lock Haven receiver since Nov. 9, 2002.
The highlight of the day was a 46-yard reception that set up Lock Haven's first touchdown. Smith has 13 catches for 206 yards and a touchdown, despite playing only three games.
Boosting the Vulcans
Cornerbacks Josh Kemp and Terrence Johnson each recorded two interceptions in California University of Pennsylvania's 24-14 victory against Slippery Rock.
Kemp, a Fort Cherry graduate and a junior at California, now has five interceptions for the season. He has also recorded 13 tackles and eight assists.
Johnson, a Woodland Hills graduate, has picked off three passes, helping compile a 5-2 record.
For the season, Johnson has 13 solo tackles and 8 assists.
