The Steelers will be without another starter for tomorrow's home game against the Kansas City Chiefs: Right guard Kendall Simmons said he will not play because of an ice burn on his left foot.
Simmons, who did not practice all week, said he will be replaced by Chris Kemoeatu, who will make his first NFL start. Simmons has the equivalent of frostbite on his foot after he left a cooling device on too long to treat a heel injury while watching "Monday Night Football."
"It's disappointing any time [the injury] is something that simple," said Simmons, who has been downgraded from probable to doubtful on the injury report. "It's more of a freak accident."
The Steelers will be without Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter (hamstring) and probably won't have cornerback Deshea Townsend (hamstring/questionable), who also didn't practice for the third day in a row.
Porter is being replaced by Arnold Harrison, a first-year free agent who is making his first NFL start. Townsend is expected to be replaced by Bryant McFadden, a No. 2 pick in 2005 who will make his second NFL start.
"He's really picked up the offense," Simmons said of Kemoeatu, a sixth-round pick in 2005 who has been inactive for 19 of 20 regular-season games with the Steelers. "I like his aggressiveness. You put him in the right position, you know he's going to maul the guy in front of you. It's just a matter of him getting in there and calming down."
Said Kemoeatu, "It's hard for a young guy going out there because all you think is 'kill, kill, kill,' instead of playing smart. Kendall talked to me about that and I think that helped me out a lot."
