Question: Hi, Ed. While watching the past two games, I have not noticed Coach Cowher's jaw extending as in past seasons. There appears to be a lack of enthusiasm on his part compared to last year. If he is not maxed out then you can't expect the team to max out. What is your take on this?

John Slovak, Rockingham, NC

BOUCHETTE: Through the magic of DVR and the theory of triangulation, I have measured Bill Cowher's jaw. In the first four games, it jutted out .1 of an inch longer in the opener than it did during the three losses, so I believed at first that you were onto something. However, last season his jaw pretty much stayed unquivering and tighter to the overall face -- and they won a Super Bowl! Further, his jaw has never been extended the way it was during the 1998 and 1999 seasons, two of the Steelers' worst under his tenure. Scientifically then -- not to mention simple reason -- I conclude there really is no connection between the length of Bill Cowher's jaw during games on the sideline and their won-lost record. But we need to conduct further tests before submitting our findings to the FBFOC -- The Football Fans' Overreaction Committee.
