A film by Pittsburgher Jose Muniain will be shown tonight during the 10th annual Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival.
The festival, founded in 1996 by a group that included actor and activist Edward James Olmos, opened Oct. 5 and will close Sunday at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. The event is showcasing feature films, documentaries and shorts from Latino filmmakers around the world.
In Muniain's "An Independent Portrait," film director Robert Young sits for his first formal portrait with the Spanish painter Felix de la Concha. The action takes place in a studio in the Hill District.
As the audience watches the painting take shape, Young discusses his career filming and living with subjects ranging from nomadic Eskimo tribes and Sicilian slum dwellers to Angolan rebels and American civil-rights revolutionaries.
Muniain, who lives in Point Breeze, is creative director/producer at Production Masters Inc., Downtown.
PMI produced the film, Pittsburghers Mark Knobil and Joe Seamans shot it, and Barrett Black provided the original score. In another local connection, the film includes several paintings from de la Concha's "One a Day: 365 Views of the Cathedral of Learning" exhibit.
