PG South: Bethel Park grad garners PAC volleyball honor
Thursday, October 12, 2006

Bethel Park graduate Lauren Spegal has been named Presidents' Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Week.

Spegal, a 5-foot-9 junior outside hitter, led Bethany College to a 2-1 record in the previous week by recording 43 kills, 24 digs and seven service aces.

Spegal's best effort came in the first match of the week, as the Bison rallied for a 3-1 victory over Ohio's Franciscan University, as she recorded 21 kills, just one off her career-high, while also recording nine digs and four aces to help the Bison rebound after losing the opening game.

After leading Bethany with eight kills in a 3-0 loss to Waynesburg, Spegal notched a team-best 15 kills in last Thursday's victory over Chatham (Pa.) College. That allowed her to become just the seventh player in Bethany history to surpass 750 for her career. She now has 759.

A strong defensive player as well, Spegal is second on the team with 31 blocks and third with 124 digs.

Saving grace for Baldwin grad

Baldwin graduate Becky Dillard has been selected the PSAC West Player of the Week for women's soccer after posting a pair of shutouts last week for Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Dillard, a senior goalkeeper, made eight saves in a 1-0 victory over Slippery Rock on Oct. 4 that moved IUP into a first-place tie with The Rock in the PSAC West standings.

She then played the first 77 minutes and registered five saves in a 4-0 win at California that gave IUP sole possession of the division lead.

For the season, Dillard has started 10 games and made 46 saves while allowing only eight goals for a 1.01 goals-against average. She has been credited as the winning goalkeeper in six of IUP's nine victories.

For her career, Dillard ranks second in school history in goals-against average (0.93) and fourth in both minutes played (2,800) and saves (224).

IUP is 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the PSAC West and is ranked 23rd in the nation in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association Division II poll.
