District Colleges roundup: Knapp leads Dukes past Fordham, 20-17

Scott Knapp, a sophomore quarterback from Perry Traditional Academy, completed a school-record 35 passes on 48 attempts for 363 yards and three touchdowns to lead visiting Duquesne University (4-2) to a 20-17 victory against Fordham yesterday.

Bruce Hocker had a career-high 10 catches for 125 yards and a touchdown that made it 20-10 with 3:09 remaining. Knapp, who completed passes to 10 different players, also threw scoring passes of 11 yards to Dan Spriggs and 7 yards to Sean Bunevich.

Fordham (1-4) led, 3-0, at halftime and 10-6 early in the fourth quarter.

Duquesne's Jeremy Mc-Cullough rushed for 43 yards on 14 carries.

The start of the contest at Fordham's Coffey Field was delayed an hour because Duquesne's buses took an incorrect route.

Robert Morris 14, Wagner 10: Erik Cwalinski passed for 186 yards and touchdowns of 13 and 18 yards to Jarvis Powers to lead the visiting Colonials (4-2, 2-0) against the Seahawks (4-2, 0-2) in the Northeast Conference. The Colonials, who won their fourth consecutive game, stopped Wagner four times from the 2 in the final minute.

Central Conn. State 62, Saint Francis 21: Justise Hairston rushed for a school-record 332 yards and tied a school record with five touchdowns as the host Blue Devils (5-1, 1-1), ranked 23rd in Division I-AA (scholarship), defeated the Red Flash (1-5, 0-2) in the NEC. Saint Francis, which lost its fifth in a row, was led by Anthony Doria's 203 yards passing and two touchdowns.

California 10, Edinboro 0: Joe Ruggiero threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Miked Dodson in the first quarter and Tyler Lorenze kicked a 35-yard field goal in the second quarter and the visiting Vulcans (4-2, 2-0) handed the Fighting Scots (3-3, 0-2) their first shutout since 1980. Ruggiero completed 22 of 32 passes for 197 yards and Brandon Lombardy carried 30 times for 126 yards. Edinboro's Trevor Harris completed 16 of 27 for 233 yards.

IUP 23, Lock Haven 14: IUP (4-1, 2-0) defeated the Bald Eagles (1-5, 0-2) for the 25th consecutive time as Chris Morgan rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown, and Kevin Weidl passed for 184 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown pass to Rickie Simmons.

Clarion 21, Cheyney 18: Dwaon Woodward had three interceptions, returning one 54 yards for a touchdown, to help the host Golden Eagles (1-5) defeat Cheyney (0-6).

Geneva 9, Seton Hill 7: Justin Sciarro passed for 180 yards and threw a touchdown pass to Mike Lehman, and Larry Diday kicked a 27-yard field goal on the final play of the first half and the visiting Golden Tornadoes (2-2) held on to defeat the Griffins (1-5). Seton Hill's Garyn Ehrlich threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Sammy Tranks in the final minutes.

Wabash 41, Allegheny 27: Allegheny's Jimmy Savage completed 38 of 53 passes for 400 yards and four touchdowns, in the loss.

Thomas More 42, Westminster 14: Monty Collier rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns to lead visiting Thomas More (3-2, 2-2) against the Titans (1-4, 0-2) in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Westminster's Kevin Franz passed for 243 yards and a touchdown.

Shippensburg 28, Slippery Rock 21: Pat Ferguson caught a 9-yard touchdown pass with 1:40 to play to snap a 21-21 tie and help the visiting Red Raiders (3-3, 1-0) top The Rock (4-2, 1-1).

Youngstown State 55, Indiana State 17: Marcus Mason rushed for 197 yards and two touchdowns and Tom Zetts threw a touchdown pass to lead the eighth-ranked Penguins (5-1, 2-0) in the Gateway Football Conference.

Bethany 34, Grove City 28: Brent Owens passed for 145 yards, including touchdowns of 24 and 4 yards to Matt Cruse, as the host Bison (3-3, 1-1) defeated the Wolverines (1-4, 1-3) for their first win in the PAC since 2002.
