An effort by a Pittsburgh City Council member to have acres of woods preserved from development was cut down to size yesterday by colleagues who said they weren't consulted.
Councilman Jim Motznik had introduced legislation to turn 407 acres citywide into permanent greenways, and add another 117 acres to city parks. All of the land, representing 1.5 percent of the city's surface area, is city-owned, and the real estate division had identified the parcels.
Council President Doug Shields faulted Mr. Motznik and the administration of Mayor Luke Ravenstahl for not seeking the input of all council members on changes that affect their districts.
"No one is trying to force greenways on anybody," said Mr. Motznik. He agreed to pare the greenways portion of his proposal down to 86 acres next to Moore Park in Brookline and 44 acres in Overbrook -- both in his district.
Council tentatively approved those designations.
The park additions will be considered in four weeks.
