Ian Snell
Key numbers: 14-11, 4.74 ERA, 169 K, 74 BB in 186 innings.
Highlight: Had most victories of any Pirates pitcher since Todd Ritchie's 15 in 1999, largely because of strikeout rate of 8.2 per nine innings that was National League's 10th-highest.
Lowlight: Occasional trouble with fastball command cost him team-high 29 home runs.
Grade: B+

Zach Duke
Key numbers: 10-15, 4.47 ERA, 117 K, 68 BB in 215 1/3 innings.
Highlight: Inning count ranked 10th in league, and he stayed strong with September to remember: 2.30 ERA in six starts.
Lowlight: Allowed more hits, 255, than any pitcher in league, most of those in a trying first half.
Grade: C

Paul Maholm
Key numbers: 8-10, 4.76 ERA, 117 K, 81 BB in 176 innings.
Highlight: Went 5-2 with 4.28 ERA after break while cutting down baserunners.
Lowlight: Opponents reached base safely 37.8 percent of time, among league's worst rates.
Grade: C-

Tom Gorzelanny
Key numbers: 2-5, 3.79 ERA, 40 K, 31 BB in 61 2/3 innings.
Highlight: Shortly after June 30 promotion, had five-start span in which he allowed total of seven earned runs.
Lowlight: Missed month to elbow tendinitis, interrupting progress.
Grade: C+

Shawn Chacon
Key numbers: 2-3, 5.48 ERA, 27 K, 27 BB in 46 innings.
Highlight: Ended up with three solid starts to shake off Jekyll-Hyde pattern that preceded it.
Lowlight: Since coming from Yankees July 31, 17 of the 32 runs he gave up came by way of home runs.
Grade: D+

Victor Santos
Key numbers: 5-9, 5.70 ERA, 81 K, 42 BB in 115 1/3 innings.
Highlight: In late May, early June, gave up only four earned runs over three starts.
Lowlight: Although healthy, did not throw one pitch after Sept. 5, having lost confidence of manager.
Grade: D-

Mike Gonzalez
Key numbers: 3-4, 24 for 24 in saves, 2.17 ERA, 64 K, 31 BB in 54 innings.
Highlight: Nailed down all 24 save opportunities in first full season as closer, averaging better than a strikeout per inning.
Lowlight: Wobbled on occasion in first half, often walking first batter faced. Missed final six weeks to elbow tendinitis.
Grade: A

Salomon Torres
Key numbers: 3-6, 3.28 ERA, 72 K, 38 BB in 93 1/3 innings.
Highlight: One of majors' best relievers in second half with 1.22 ERA, 12 saves in 13 chances, all while matching franchise record with 94 appearances.
Lowlight: Allowed all six of his home runs in first half.
Grade: A-
2007 salary status: Will make $2.6 million, a raise of $675,000.

John Grabow
Key numbers: 4-2, 4.13 ERA, 66 K, 30 BB in 69 2/3 innings.
Highlight: Became stronger in second half -- reversing pattern from previous year -- and grew into late-inning mainstay against hitters from both sides.
Lowlight: Opponents batted .260 against him.
Grade: B+

Matt Capps
Key numbers: 9-1, 3.79 ERA, 56 K, 12 BB in 80 2/3 innings.
Highlight: Outrageous control numbers -- five of those walks were intentional -- had him called upon to pitch 83 times, one shy of major-league rookie record.
Lowlight: Cleary wore down, as seen in 5.73 September ERA.
Grade: B+

Damaso Marte
Key numbers: 1-7, 3.70 ERA, 63 K, 31 BB in 58 1/3 innings.
Highlight: Despite career-high 75 appearances, saved best month for last with nine scoreless appearances out of 10.
Lowlight: Record was indicative of tendency to unravel in tight situations.
Grade: C-

Ronny Paulino
Key numbers: .310, 6 HR, 19 2B, 55 RBIs in 442 at-bats.
Highlight: Started year as third-stringer, went on to become baseball's second rookie catcher since 1969 to bat .310 or higher.
Lowlight: Was credited with handling pitchers well, but .988 fielding percentage was third-lowest in majors because of 11 errors, 9 passed balls.
Grade: A-

Highlight: Caught opening day.
Lowlight: Batting average was lowest of any player in majors with 100 or more at-bats.

Xavier Nady

Lowlight: Had .359 opening month with Pirates, but slumped to .219 in final month.
Grade: C

Ryan Doumit
Key numbers: .208, 6 HR, 9 2B, 17 RBIs in 149 at-bats.
Highlight: Fifteen of his 31 hits were for extra bases, lending some credence to Pirates being intrigued by his bat.
Lowlight: Not nearly enough hits to force team to find permanent position for him.

Jose Castillo

Highlight: Homered six times in final five games of May, raising anew optimism about his power.
Lowlight: Virtually vanished after break, batting .216 with three home runs and committing regular mental lapses in field and on basepaths.

Freddy Sanchez
Key numbers: .344, 6 HR, 53 doubles, 2 3B, 85 RBIs, 52 K, 31 BB in 582 at-bats.
Highlight: Topped .300 each month on his way to becoming franchise's 25th National League batting champion, on top of superb defense at variety of positions.
Lowlight: Not his fault, but spent most of April on bench because management incorrectly pegged him as utility infielder.
Grade: A+

Highlight: Batted .410 in July, once ailing foot that bothered him early in season had time to heal.
Lowlight: Early struggles, combined with Sanchez's rise, cost him starting job in May despite $4 million salary.
Grade: C-

Jack Wilson
Key numbers: .273, 8 HR, 27 2B, 35 RBIs, 9 sacrifice bunts in 543 at-bats.
Highlight: Posted second-best average of career, despite .190 June swoon, and was fixture at No. 2 in order.
Lowlight: Uncharacteristic 18 errors tied for fifth-most among league shortstops.
Grade: B-

Jason Bay
Key numbers: .286, 35 HR, 29 2B, 3 3B, 109 RBIs, 155 K, 101 BB, 11 of 13 steals in 570 at-bats.
Highlight: Career highs in home runs and RBIs, including becoming team's first right-handed batter with 35 home runs since Dick Stuart had that many in 1961.
Lowlight: Average with men in scoring position was just .242, prompting questions of how much better his season might have been.
Grade: A-

Chris Duffy
Key numbers: .255, 2 HR, 14 2B, 3 3B, 18 RBIs, 71 K, 19 BB, 26 of 27 steals in 314 at-bats.
Highlight: Finally became leadoff hitter team desperately needed in final two months, with .315 average, and his success rate of steals was best in majors.
Lowlight: Batted .194 through early May, then left baseball for a month rather than accept demotion.
Grade: C

Highlight: Had exceptional spring training, remained in majors as reliable bench player with some pop.
