Mt. Lebanon rallied, though, behind quarterback Rob Marasti and took the lead in the fourth quarter, 21-20. Then McKeesport found the Keys to victory.
Quarterback Kamryn Keys raced 14 yards with 1:58 remaining, giving the Tigers a 28-21 triumph. That also gave him four rushing touchdowns and 231 yards on 21 carries.
McKeesport (4-1, 1-0) rebounded from a one-point loss to Penn Hills the previous week. This also was the Tigers' eighth victory in their past nine games with the Blue Devils (2-3, 0-1).
They have faced off in the regular season each of the past seven years, plus two playoff games. The Tigers have won the past five.
McKeesport, No. 4 in the Post-Gazette's WPIAL Class AAAA rankings, prevailed last night even though Mt. Lebanon had the ball for 32 of the 48 minutes and outgained the Tigers, 409-273.
Keys broke a scoreless tie in the second quarter with darts of 59 and 2 yards. The Blue Devils, however, countered in the third quarter. Marasti fired scoring passes of 15 yards to Jeremy Tissenbaum and 30 yards to Chip Young for a 14-14 tie.
Keys scored from 4 yards in the fourth quarter, but the extra point was blocked. Marasti's 9-yard pass to Andrew Devlin and Steve Stombaugh's kick put Mt. Lebanon up, 21-20.
Keys scored again and the Tigers got a two-point conversion, but the Blue Devils weren't done. They drove from their 17 to the Mc-Keesport 21, but Marasti threw incomplete on the final play.
Marasti completed 6 of 13 for 88 yards and gained 96 yards on 13 carries. Teammate Joe Rodella had 115 yards on 21 rushes.
OTHER GAMES
Bethel Park 51, Canon-McMillan 21
Justin Pratt rambled for four touchdowns and Jeff Stewart passed for three, as the host Black Hawks amassed 642 yards of offense in a Great Southern Conference triumph.
Bethel Park (3-2, 1-0), which extended its winning streak to three, trailed, 21-10, after one quarter. Then the Black Hawks outscored the Big Macs (1-4, 0-1) by a 41-0 count the rest of the way.
Pratt finished with 254 yards on 24 carries, including scores of 4, 34, 17 and 24 yards. Stewart completed 14 of 22 for 279 yards, hitting Tim Picard for touchdowns of 4 and 39 yards and Eric Bielich with a 77-yarder. Picard had eight catches for 142 yards.
Canon-McMillan had five passes intercepted.
Upper St. Clair 38, Baldwin 7
The Panthers had no trouble remaining the only undefeated team in WPIAL Class AAAA, racing to a 24-0 halftime advantage and coasting past the visiting Highlanders in the Great Southern.
Grant Serdy ran for 2- and 9-yard scores, Pat McShane fired a 4-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Everett and Alex Romanis kicked a 21-yard field goal in the initial half for Upper St. Clair (5-0, 1-0), which is No. 1 in the WPIAL and No. 3 in the PIAA.
The Panthers' Neil Apfelbaum and Kevin McCullough later ran for scores of 5 and 4 yards.
Jeff Joyce broke the shutout with a 57-yard bolt for Baldwin (0-5, 0-1), the only winless team and lowest-scoring team (6.0 points per game) in WPIAL Class AAAA.
Woodland Hills 34, Fox Chapel 0
Vondre Griffin ran for one touchdown and passed for three, two of them to tight end Rob Gronkowski, as the Wolverines bagged the visiting Foxes (1-4, 0-1) n the Big East.
Woodland Hills (4-1, 1-0), No. 2 in the WPIAL and No. 5 in the PIAA, took a 21-0 halftime bulge despite four turnovers (three fumbles, one interception). Griffin scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter, then hit Devan Johnson for a 31-yard score with 2:31 on the clock. Fox Chapel fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and on the next snap, Griffin passed 20 yards to Gronkowski for a score.
Griffin and Gronkowski, a transfer, linked up again in the third quarter for a 34-yard touchdown. Griffin finished with 183 yards of offense: 120 passing (5 for 8) and 63 rushing (six carries).
Wolverines running back Marcel Farrish did not play due to injury.
Central Catholic 37, Penn-Trafford 18
The visiting Vikings broke open a close contest in the second quarter, and went to defeat the Warriors (2-3, 0-1) in Foothills play.
Central Catholic (4-1, 1-0), No. 3 in the WPIAL, rebounded from a 17-14 loss to Woodland Hills. Freshman Dom Timbers and Dan Vaughan combined for five rushing touchdowns for Central. Timbers' scores covered 2, 8 and 1 yards; Vaughan had two 1-yard scores.
Gateway 21 Plum 19
The visiting Gators never trailed, but they ended up hanging on against their Big East rival.
Dorian Bell carried 21 times for 142 yards and two touchdowns to spark Gateway (3-2, 1-0), which has won three in a row. Kyle Simmons threw three touchdown passes, two to Ryan Webb, for the Mustangs (2-3, 0-1). He hit 21 of 35 for 283 yards.
Penn Hills 33, Kiski Area 12
Down 12-0 in the first quarter, the Indians scored the final 33 points to rout the Cavaliers in Big East play.
Josh Vick, the WPIAL passing leader, left with a knee injury for Kiski (2-3, 0-1).
Aaron Williams scored two touchdowns and Tom Fulton passed for two for Penn Hills (3-1, 1-0). Williams, who had 155 yards on 21 carries, scored on an 8-yard run and a 24-yard pass. Fulton, 11 of 27 for 144 yards, also threw 34 yards to Brandon Carter for a touchdown.
Erie McDowell 20, Butler 7
The Golden Tornado traveled north for a Northern Five contest and had the wind taken out of its sails.
McDowell (2-3, 0-1), which is not eligible for the WPIAL playoffs, limited Butler quarterback Nick Monteleone to 11-of-25 passing for 72 yards and intercepted him three times. Butler (2-3, 0-1) trailed 14-0 in the second quarter when it got its only score, a 16-yard Monteleone run.
Hempfield 20, Connellsville 13
Shawn Faulk's 28-yard pass to Josh Gardner with 15 seconds remaining broke a tie and gave the Spartans a Foothills road win.
Patrick Costello kicked 32- and 22-yard field goals and Jordan Jury scored on a 3-yard run for Hempfield (2-3, 1-0). The Falcons (1-4, 0-1) led, 13-3, at halftime on two Scotty Jones scores: a 4-yard bolt and a 75-yard fumble recovery. They've lost three in a row.
