Lake Erie: Streams were blown out yesterday from Wednesday night rainfall. Walnut Creek typically comes down before Elk Creek. Steelhead are as far as Sterritania Road on Elk and throughout Walnut. Good sizes and numbers are reported, with some 9 and 10 pounders being weighed. Perch fishing has been outstanding in 60 to 70 feet of water, when anglers can get onto the lake, but conditions have been rough through much of September.
Allegheny River (Forest County): Joe Martinelli of Mount Washington won last weekend's 47th annual Pennsylvania State Championship Fishing Tournament out of Tidioute, Pa., besting 267 contestants. He qualified Saturday with a 24.31-pound, 41-inch muskie and a 31-inch muskie, both caught on glide baits. Sunday, Martinelli took the $1,000 first prize with a 13.29-pound, 37-inch muskie caught on a Wiley Head Shaker, and a 4.24-pound, 26-inch northern pike.
Lake Arthur (Butler County): Hybrid striper action has been good on alewives, shiners and blue and silver Bomber Long-As from dusk to midnight and again at daybreak. Channel catfish up to 12 and 15 pounds are reported day and evening. The fall pattern appears to be kicking in early, especially at the eastern end of the lake. Crappies up to 1-pound are coming in 8 to 10 feet on the brush piles. A few walleyes are hitting in 10 to 15 feet off railroad beds. Perch are hitting in the creek channels. Anglers are also catching largemouth bass.
Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Anglers catching nice walleyes on jigs and blade baits are also nabbing largemouth bass. Crappies, including some slabs, are coming on minnows.
Sandy Creek (Mercer County): Samantha Lang of Franklin, Pa. caught two bowfins, 26 1/2 inches, 7 3/4 pounds and 18 inches, 2 pounds, on shiners below the dam. Dan Hardisty of Franklin caught a 28 1/2-inch, 5 1/2-pound northern pike on a shiner below the dam.
Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Crappies are hitting around the docks, with anglers taking more than half their limits. Light fishing pressure is reported but good bluegill and crappie catches are being made at night off the Sheakleyville Bridge.
Allegheny River: Nice numbers of walleyes in mixed sizes are reported. One angler landed an 8 pounder from shore at Lock No. 3. Small saugers and smallmouth bass up to 2 pounds also have been caught. The Venture Outdoors Downtown TriAnglers report good fishing along the North Shore near PNC Park, where 23 fish were released. Highlights include Kristi Niekamp's 11-inch smallmouth, John Force's 22.5-inch carp, and Ray Beale's 19.5-inch catfish.
Ohio River: Charlie Mueller of Bethel Park landed a 40-pound, 46 1/2-inch catfish with 28-inch girth on a sucker. Pro angler Keith Eshbaugh reports catches of walleyes, saugers and big hybrid striped bass.
Monongahela River: Pressure has been light, but legal walleyes are coming at the mouth of Pigeon and Mingo creeks.
Loyalhanna River (Westmoreland County): Rich Kacsuta of Rector caught a 3-pound brown trout on a Picket Pin in the delayed harvest section.
Youghiogheny River (Fayette County): Good trout fishing is reported, with one angler catching a 7-pound brown trout on a stick bait while fishing for walleyes in the tailrace of the dam.
