Summit Academy has not made the playoffs since joining the WPIAL in 1998. But after four weeks, the Knights are atop the Class AA Tri-County North Conference standings.
Summit Academy pulled out a 12-6 overtime win against visiting Mohawk yesterday that gave the Knights sole possession of first place in the conference with a 3-0 record. Laurel, Mohawk, Riverside and Mars each have one loss.
Summit Academy (3-1 overall) had won its first two games of the season for the first time, but the wins were against Union and Neshannock, two of the weakest teams in the conference. Mohawk figured to give Summit Academy its first real test. The Warriors came in with a 3-0 record.
Summit Academy took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on Stephen Grandison's 25-yard pass to Leonard Brown. The run for the 2-point conversion failed.
Mohawk tied it in the second quarter on Devin Macri's 6-yard touchdown run, but the extra-point attempt failed.
In overtime, each team gets a chance to score from the 10. Summit Academy took the ball first and scored on first down when Brown caught a 10-yard pass from Grandison. A pass fell incomplete on the 2-point conversion.
On Mohawk's possession, Brown came up with the big play again. He intercepted a third-down pass in the end zone.
Brown had three catches for 85 yards and Grandison completed 7 of 20 for 125 yards. Mohawk quarterback Mike Upham completed 13 of 15 passes for 116 yards. Mohawk outgained Summit, 327-147.
