The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission meets tomorrow and Tuesday to act on a number of proposals, including adding eight more streams to the earlier opening day of trout season (first Saturday after March 28), scheduled for the southeast part of the state in 2007.
The added streams closest to Pittsburgh would include Blacklog Creek and Tuscarora Creek in Huntingdon County.
The commission is expected to approve the establishment of brood stock muskie lakes in the state that would be catch and release only in April and May, since an anesthesia used on muskies during the breeding process cannot, by FDA rules, be consumed by humans during a "detox" period.
Those lakes include Canadohta, Tamarack, Edinboro, Sugar, Conneaut, Woodcock and Union City. The commission also is expected to rename several lakes in the state as catch and release only, although the lakes already have special regulations. They include Pine Township Park Pond, Raccoon Creek State Park's upper pond and Lower Burrell Park Pond. The complete agenda can be found at www.fish.state.pa.us
Good river results
Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission biologist Rick Lorson is pleased with what he saw on the Allegheny River at Freeport during electro-fishing last Tuesday night. While he captured average numbers of smallmouth bass more than 12 inches and 15 inches, he said he saw a "very strong" 2005 year class, which are this year's 5- and 6-inch bass.
"That bodes well for trophy catches a couple of years from now," Lorson said. He also handled good numbers of sauger, including many 14 and 15 inchers, and walleye, up to 22 and 25 inches. The surprise of the night was a 25-pound, 40-inch muskie, he said.
Clean up ordered
The Department of Environmental Protection on Friday ordered Norfolk Southern to clean up ground contamination and fully restore Sinnemahoning-Portage Creek, which was devastated by a 31-car train derailment and chemical spill June 30. DEP will hold a public meeting Wednesday at the Cameron County courthouse in Emporium, Pa., to involve residents in helping design restoration projects, which would be funded by civil penalties levied against Norfolk Southern.
