Morten Andersen hasn't kicked in the NFL since 2004. He returned to the Atlanta Falcons yesterday at age 46, armed with plenty of material about becoming the second-oldest player in league history behind George Blanda.
A quick sampling:
"I've got my Geritol."
"I was just talking to my old roommate, Y.A. Tittle, this morning."
The Falcons didn't waste any time ribbing their geriatric kicker, who was signed a day earlier after Michael Koenen missed six of eight field-goal attempts in Atlanta's first two games. The Falcons (2-0) are hoping Andersen can solve the most glaring weakness in their first two games. After winning the kicking job by going 8 for 8 in the preseason, Koenen missed two field goals in a season-opening victory at Carolina. That was just a warm-up for last week, when he failed to connect on any of his four attempts against Tampa Bay, none of them longer than 40 yards.
Titans
Coach Jeff Fisher lashed out at critics of Tennessee's dealings with quarterback Billy Volek, saying that Volek lied to him and never took advantage of the opportunity to be the starter. The Titans finally traded Volek Tuesday to the San Diego Chargers for a sixth-round draft pick. Fisher said Volek asked to be traded the day the Titans signed Kerry Collins late last month.
Volek inherited the quarterback job when the Titans traded Steve McNair to Baltimore in June, and Fisher claimed it was in the first week after Volek was made the starter during the offseason that the quarterback lied to the coach. Fisher wouldn't say what the lie was.
49ers
Former Pitt cornerback Shawntae Spencer agreed to a six-year contract extension. The deal is worth more than $12 million in total salary.
Panthers
Receiver Steve Smith denied the rumor that he's coming back slowly from his hamstring injury as a ploy to get a new contract. Smith is listed as questionable for the game against the Buccaneers Sunday. The Panthers have managed just one touchdown and 19 points in an 0-2 start.
Redskins
Advocates for the deaf are suing the team to get it to offer closed-captioning during games at FedEx Field.
