WPIAL Class AA Roundup: Yough proves its mettle with win against Jeannette

Yough proved it is a contender for the Class AA Interstate Conference title last night when it defeated Jeannette, 35-21, in a battle of unbeatens at Yough's Cougar Mountain.

The Cougars scored twice in the fourth quarter to secure the victory against Jeannette (2-1, 2-1).

Cody Wilson had the big game for Yough (3-0, 3-0), which dropped down to Class AA this season. He carried 26 times for 178 yards and scored on runs of 12, 7 and 66 yards. Yough finished with 226 yards rushing and 464 yards total offense.

Jeannette quarterback Terrelle Pryor completed 12 of 23 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown. He also scored on a 2-yard run.

OTHER GAMES

Greensburg Central Catholic 69, Brownsville 7
Max Suter had one of those games that will be talked about for a while for Greensburg Central Catholic, the Post-Gazette's No. 1-ranked team in the WPIAL and PIAA. Suter had 430 all-purpose yards in the Interstate Conference win at Brownsville (0-3, 0-3). He rushed for 220 yards on nine carries and scored three touchdowns. He also caught passes for 55 yards and a score and had kickoff returns of 55 and 95 yards, with the 95-yarder going for a touchdown. He did all that in the first half as Greensburg Central (3-0, 2-0) built a 55-7 lead.

South Park 12, Charleroi 6
South Park (3-0, 3-0) ran its winning streak to 19 games, the longest current streak in the WPIAL, with the Century Conference victory in two overtimes at Charleroi (1-2, 0-1). Taryle Ferguson scored the winning points on a 7-yard run for the No. 4-ranked Eagles.

Valley 15, Freeport 14
Freeport (1-2, 1-2) threw a scare into No. 5-ranked Valley in the Allegheny Conference, but the visiting Vikings (3-0, 3-0) survived. Madison Harvey pulled in a 25-yard pass from quarterback Jorel Burrell with six seconds left to give Valley the win.

Aliquippa 36, Freedom 0
Aliquippa (3-0, 2-0), No. 2-ranked in the WPIAL and PIAA, had little trouble with visiting Freedom (0-3, 0-3) in the Midwestern Athletic Conference. Aliquippa quarterback D'Mar Jeter completed 8 of 9 passes for 171 yards and three scores.

Beaver 21, New Brighton 18
Beaver (2-1, 2-0) knocked New Brighton (2-1, 2-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten with the MAC win at the Lions' Oak Hill Field. Beaver's Alex George rushed 12 times for 110 yards and scored on runs of 59 and 26 yards.

Center 21, Beaver Falls 12
All the scoring in this MAC game took place in the first half. Maurice Carter carried 29 times 164 yards and scored all three Center (2-1, 2-1) touchdowns. Beaver Falls (1-2, 1-2) quarterback Tavar Henderson completed 6 of 14 passes for 101 yards.

Ellwood City 28, Quaker Valley 13
After winning its first game in the MAC, Quaker Valley (1-2, 1-2) has fallen on hard times. Trey McKim caught four passes for 87 yards and Nick Nardone completed 5 of 14 passes for 102 yards to lead Ellwood City (1-2, 1-2) to the win.

Waynesburg 55, Southmoreland 10
Southmoreland held a ceremony naming its field after former Washington Redskins lineman and current Steelers assistant head coach Russ Grimm. It didn't do the Scotties any good as Waynesburg rolled to an Interstate Conference victory. Waynesburg (2-1, 2-1) had three players rush for 100 or more yards.

Washington 55, East Allegheny 20
The Little Prexies (1-2, 1-2) scored 27 points in the first quarter, added 14 in the second and cruised to the home win against East Allegheny (1-2, 1-2) in the Interstate Conference. Alex Evans had a punt return of 65 yards for Washington, and teammate C.J. Baker had one of 60 in the first quarter.

Carlynton 14, Burgettstown 13
Dan Conley scored on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter for Burgettstown (0-3, 0-3), but Carlynton (1-2, 1-2) blocked the extra-point attempt to preserve the Century Conference win.

Brentwood 14, South Allegheny 10
Akeem Moore scored on a 69-yard pass from Da'Von Moore in the fourth quarter to give Brentwood (2-1, 2-1) the Century Conference victory.

Northgate 21, Deer Lakes 0
Northgate remained undefeated with the shutout in the Allegheny Conference. The Flames (3-0, 3-0) rushed for 259 yards and got big plays from Steve Mayhew and Curtis Howard who scored on 60 and 64-yard runs, respectively.

Burrell 42, West Shamokin 6
The Buccaneers (1-2, 1-1) scored 20 points in the second quarter and cruised to the Allegheny Conference victory at West Shamokin (0-3, 0-3).

Shenango 41, Mars 35
Shenango (2-1, 1-1) won the shootout against Mars (2-1, 2-1) in the Tri-County North. Quarterback Rocco Colavecchia completed 30 of 51 passes for 449 yards for Shenango.

Riverside 28, Cornell 12
Jake Wickline rushed for 165 yards on 27 carries and a touchdown in leading Riverside (2-1, 2-1) against Cornell (0-3, 0-3) in Tri-County North action at Cornell's Frank Letteri Stadium.

Mohawk 35, Neshannock 0
The Warriors (3-0, 3-0) continued to roll in the Tri-County North Conference. Brandon Van Tassel paced Mohawk in the game at Neshannock (0-3, 0-2) and scored on runs of 5 and 46 yards. He also raced 74 yards with a punt return for a touchdown.

Laurel 46, Union 16
Laurel (2-1, 2-1) scored 20 points in the third quarter to secure the Tri-County North Conference victory at Union (0-3, 0-3). Brett Kerr rushed for 78 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns for Laurel.

McGuffey 19, South Fayette 14
The Highlanders (1-2) knocked off South Fayette (2-1) in a non-conference game at McGuffey. The winning score came on a 37-yard interception return by Chris Sibert in the fourth quarter.

Sto-Rox 35, Slippery Rock 17
The Vikings traveled to District 10 Slippery Rock for a non-conference game and cruised. Quarterback Jules Crosby completed 6 of 11 passes for 169 yards and two scores for Sto-Rox (2-1). Teammate Anthony DiMichele caught three passes for 109 yards and had a 58-yard punt return for a score.
